Gallagher Bassett’s new leaders driving growth
In the life cycle of a company, robust growth often comes with increased complexity of processes, team structures and cultural nuances. Effectively managing this complexity is a tough nut to crack, but one exemplary approach to overcoming these challenges can be seen in Gallagher Bassett’s recent restructuring to a division-led business in Australia.
The claims and risk management provider has been steadily growing since it commenced operations in Australia more than 25 years ago. However, the past three years have seen rapid growth that brought into sharp focus how Gallagher Bassett can best deploy its resources and expertise. The company’s acquisition of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan management provider My Plan Manager Group (MPMG) in late 2023 was a further catalyst for Gallagher Bassett’s new structural strategy.
“It became clear that a divisional structure would best serve our future growth,” says Pete Nicholson, CEO of Gallagher Bassett Australia.
“To achieve this, we have created three divisions – General Insurance, Personal Injury and Disability – to enhance our focus and ability to deliver tailored solutions to these sectors. This structure allows each division to grow independently while maintaining a unified culture and mission.
“This approach will ultimately drive better outcomes for our clients, our people and those who rely on us in their time of need.”
Having invested significantly in a state-of-the-art technology platform, MPMG leads the plan management industry by supporting participants in accessing the widest choice of NDIS providers to best suit their needs, while also ensuring essential safeguards are in place to help protect and manage an individual’s vulnerability and risk.
“The combination of an optimal organisational structure with best-of-breed technology solutions has been key to us delivering on the high levels of access, support and safeguarding that both our clients and government expect,” Kittel says.
“The sharing of best practices and different technology applications across the three Gallagher Bassett divisions enables all of us to accelerate our ability to deliver even better client outcomes.”
Gallagher Bassett operates in increasingly complex markets, requiring adept and motivated leadership for the claims and risk management provider to continually improve its services. Pete Diskin, chief client officer, has been appointed as deputy CEO – General Insurance and notes the dynamic factors impacting the market.
“The market is continuing to evolve and, with that, so do the solutions needed by our clients,” Diskin says.
“With tightening regulation, emerging risk and evolving coverage complexity, our clients need better insights over exposures. This is why our focus is to provide our clients with strategies and outcomes that safeguard them now and in the future.
“We have an industry-leading team, with deep expertise, who operate in partnership with our clients to drive outcomes against their evolving financial and reputational challenges.”
Regulatory changes are another area in which up-to-date expertise is crucial. The NDIS scheme, for example, has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australians with disability and their families for the better since its introduction 10 years ago.
Now, following reporting from the Disability Royal Commission and the NDIS Review late last year, the scheme is facing a period of significant adjustment with a tabled amendment bill signalling structural change to take place over the coming five-year period.
“There is no doubt that change is needed, and we welcome the government’s commitment to engage with the disability community through co-design, to ensure the transparency and detail is available regarding the proposed changes,” Kittel says.
“MPMG strongly support the government’s commitment to stamping out fraud in the scheme, and our market-leading technology enables us to conduct payment integrity checks, detect fraud and ensure correct use of participant funds.”

With an overarching mission to help people and companies prevent, manage and overcome the impact of risk, key leaders from within the company have been appointed to drive success in each division.
Lionel Charmetant, chief operating officer, has been appointed as deputy CEO – Personal Injury and believes the new structure supports Gallagher Bassett’s culture of transparent and constructive collaboration.
“Our new divisional structure exemplifies our culture; our divisions are empowered to make decisions and build solutions that meet the needs of our clients and are backed by a leadership team committed to autonomy,” Charmetant says.
He anticipates ongoing improvements in service excellence and positive impacts on the claims management value chain, facilitated by cross-functional sharing of expertise. The outcome of this is clear in the value being delivered through Gallagher Bassett’s acquisition of MPMG.
“By partnering the expertise of MPMG and Gallagher Bassett’s leadership teams, we have built an exciting path forward through the divisional structure. At the core of this effort is improving our ability to leverage technology for business impact through automation and data analytics,” Charmetant says.
The Disability division, comprised of the MPMG team, will continue to be led by the CEO of MPMG, Jane Kittel.

Adapting to market challenges
As markets diversify and mature, a one-size-fits-all approach becomes less effective over time – which is where Gallagher Bassett’s bespoke structure comes into play.
“The ability to offer solutions that are tailored to our clients’ unique needs is a key element of success,” Nicholson says.
“By building dedicated teams for each division, we can develop solutions that specifically address their challenges and provide the best possible outcomes.”
Nicholson cites the example of rising rates of mental injury across Australia. This phenomenon led Gallagher Bassett to establish a national mental
“This framework ensures a consistent approach but also allows for our team to adapt it based on the communities our clients operate in. Whether we are working with a first responder or a teacher, we are able to provide them with support that’s appropriate for their circumstances,” Nicholson says.
The specialised Mental Health Hub is part of a long-term strategy to address and support capabilities around rising mental injury claims, growing liabilities and increased customer expectations.
“I joined Gallagher Bassett because our team is driven to help people during some of the most challenging times of their life. To me, there is simply no better mission and daily motivation,” she says.
Diskin started his career as an investigator, which gave him a unique insight into the claims industry and the nuances of meeting both client and customer expectations.
“What I enjoy most about Gallagher Bassett is our culture and how consistent it is across the globe,” he says. “We are constantly learning from and supporting each other and are driven by a shared purpose to help our clients through challenging times.”
At the end of the day, insurance and claims management are key to the economy – without it a building can’t go up, a plane can’t take off, and injured workers can’t return to their livelihoods. An approach that maintains autonomy while encouraging collaboration seems to be a clear differentiator for companies seeking to deliver service excellence.
A constellation of strengths
Each of the divisional leaders brings an impressive array of skills and experience to drive the success of their division, and ultimately Gallagher Bassett.
Kittel joined MPMG to support its transformation from a startup to a sustainably scaled business with a clear purpose to make a difference in the community.
“Throughout my career, I have most enjoyed creating environments where our people can thrive and achieve their goals, so MPMG’s mission to create a fair and inclusive Australia resonated strongly with me. Helping our people to grow and develop their careers and delivering for our clients is incredibly motivating,” Kittel says.
Charmetant is also driven by a sense of duty to help empower others.
