FTA Insurance, the Sydney-based underwriter and Lloyd’s coverholder,
is on a roll. The broker-focused agency prides itself on providing fast quotes, competitive prices, and winning new businesses. Many brokers seem to agree.
For two years running, brokers have chosen FTA as a winner in the Insurance Business 5-Star Awards for Professional Indemnity Insurers.
“Each year that FTA continues to receive the 5- Star award confirms that FTA's broking partners value the products and expert advice they receive from FTA,” says Christian Garling, FTA’s founder and managing director.
“This pushes us to keep up the service to our brokers and makes us feel great about the work we are doing.”

Garling, an insurance industry veteran for nearly three decades, says his agency’s success in the professional indemnity (PI) market comes down to having a great team that values brokers.
“Most brokers really enjoy dealing with someone whose expertise they have confidence in and whom they can trust. That and competitive premiums is what FTA brings to the table and brokers have responded very strongly to this,” he says.
Brokers rated FTA particularly highly in the directors and officers (D&O) category, a hard market with limited capacity. Garling attributes his agency’s D&O success to targeting well-run private companies and acquiring substantial knowledge of their operations.
“This has in turn lead to FTA and its brokers being able to provide a better offering to its brokers and their clients,” he says.
Garling also noted FTA’s success in recruitment and labour hire PI. “FTA has one of the best wordings for this industry as it provides full cover for on hired activities,” he says.
Savvy adoption of technology has helped propel FTA’s business, including in the PI space, where the company recently released a new platform.
“Brokers have found the user experience to be very easy and, in particular, they like the ability to use the insured’s own business description rather than be forced to use the pre-existing descriptions,” says Garling.
He doesn’t expect the PI market to improve anytime soon, saying that the professional indemnity market has some very exposed areas that have attritional and catastrophic claims.
Garling says some underwriters and insurers have failed to understand these market difficulties and consequently haven’t charged sufficiently and provided limits that are too high.
“The long tail nature of professional indemnity means that it takes time these for losses to be apparent,” he says.
However, he adds, it can also take many years before profits appear and premiums can be lowered.
“FTA has continued to target known low loss ratio areas and provide excellent results to long-term capacity providers. Thus FTA, its brokers and their clients continue to benefit from premiums that are more competitive than others are able to offer,” he says.
FTA Insurance provides fast turnaround and brings better cover with sharper pricing. FTA has a broad underwriting appetite on all of its insurance products, including professional indemnity (with an optional combined PI and GL wording available), design and construct, IT liability, management liability and cyber liability. FTA targets on-hired labour providers, IT companies and contractors, business consultants and D&C companies.
FTA Insurance is one of a select group of coverholders at Lloyd’s & Partners with top-shelf security such as Chubb, AIG and Berkshire Hathaway via their Lloyd’s platforms. FTA received a 5-Star Professional Indemnity Award from Insurance Business magazine in 2021 and continues to be highly rated
in the market.
