"West Oak’s success has come from always putting our clients’ best interests first and always finding ways to improve and add more value to them"

Natasha Gale has over 30 years of experience in the finance and insurance industries. “In the early days, I was fortunate to have had some great opportunities and I put my hand up for everything. I have been lucky to have worked with some fantastic people and had an amazing support network, allowing me to take a more active role in senior appointments.”
Natasha has worked across facets of the banking, general insurance, premium funding and underwriting agency environments for companies such as iCare, ME Bank, Wesfarmers/Lumley Insurance, Allianz/Hunter Premium Funding and Westpac.
In the early part of her career, she had the opportunity to work across multiple business units and areas at Westpac over 12 years. One of her favourite roles was when Westpac became a major sponsor at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. She secured a role that eventually led her to taking up Olympics marketing manager – retail banking.
Then came her establishment into the insurance industry with six years at Allianz, eight years with Lumley/Wesfarmers Insurance, with roles at ME Bank and iCare before taking a career break and setting up her own consultancy business.
She joined ARAG Australia in 2019 as the general manager because she was excited about growing a relatively unknown product in the Australian insurance market. Then, great trust was placed in her as the German head office could see her potential and in 2020, she became CEO of ARAG Australia. She values the opportunity to build a legacy for ARAG and to work with amazing people.
“Insurance is very much about building relationships and connections. During the pandemic, it was difficult to do this, which made being part of a start-up very difficult, not to mention the tough market conditions we experienced,” she says. “Fortunately, having adult children, I didn’t have the added stress of home schooling or child care challenges like so many other parents faced. Almost a third of women left the insurance industry during the pandemic due to family and career conflicts and working-from-home pressures.”
Twelve months into the CEO role, she loves that every day is different and comes with real excitement and challenges. Like a lot of women who are taking that next step, she struggled with imposter syndrome. “When I was asked to take on the CEO role, I really had to dig deep in my bucket of ‘can I really do this?’” she says. “Being a start-up business, a new product to the Australian market as well as reporting into an international managing director and very little local support, there have been many moments of self-reflection.”
Her obvious humility is reflected in her genuine leadership style. She always tries to bring that genuineness to all aspects of leading a team regardless of gender or role, providing encouragement and offering a collaborative environment but knowing that there are times decisions need to be made. She believes one of the great privileges in business is supporting and encouraging others to succeed.
