“I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes”

Kristy Meaton, Corporate Services Manager at AAMC, likes to keep things in perspective.
“Don’t sweat the small stuff,” she says. “It’s easy to get hung up on every tiny detail or put too much focus on things that don’t really matter and lose sight of the bigger picture.”
For Meaton, her outlook has shifted somewhat from her early career. In university, she studied communications. Things were going well, and she was being promoted up the ladder, and then one day she heard her female global CEO speak.
“A young female engineer asked for the CEO’s advice on career planning,” she recalls. “The CEO simply said, ‘Focus on doing the very best you can in the role you are in, and your career will take care of itself.’”
Highly impressed, Meaton has followed that advice to this day, making the most of the opportunities that present themselves and always striving to do her best.
One of the biggest challenges she’s faced has been smoothing the transition of AAMC’s focus from operations and hitting key performance indicators to addressing more regulatory and licensing requirements – a more “corporate” way of doing things.
“Transformation is difficult in any company, and one of the biggest challenges in the first 12 months was convincing the wider management team and employees that having those more ‘corporate’ frameworks and procedures is an opportunity to demonstrate to the industry that we are truly committed to being a leader in what we do,” she says. “Patience, determination, a high level of trust from our two directors, and my small but extremely talented team are what get me through the challenging times. And sailing – the sea, sunshine, and salt air are my cure for everything.”
Meaton’s biggest achievement is developing and implementing the company’s overarching governance and enterprise risk management framework, engaging consultants to help her navigate the requirements of the Hayne Royal Commission.
“Nothing could’ve prepared me for the final 81-page report and roadmap I received,” she says. “To say I felt overwhelmed as I read through the details would be a major understatement. I had absolutely no idea how I was going to deliver a project of this scale and impact across the whole business. My recently appointed risk and compliance advisor and I then spent the next couple of weeks opening the document, trying to work out where on earth to start, and then closing the document down again. However, I knew this was a great opportunity for AAMC to grow and put us ahead of the competition as a service provider in an industry that was about to significantly tighten practices.
“We then added another resource to the team, broke the tasks down into manageable chunks and got to work. This wouldn’t be listed as my biggest achievement without my fantastic team. Their knowledge, dedication and support have been key to this and every other achievement I could list during my time at AAMC.”

How does he distinguish himself among fellow brokers?
“I believe all brokers are working very hard in a difficult market,” he says. “However, I have demonstrated continued growth, advocacy and performance on my client’s behalf, which is now recognised [for 10 consecutive years] in the Elite Broker awards.”
In 1990, Dixon got started with FAI, working in claims and as a team leader. From the late 1990s up until 2003, he worked at FAI and Suncorp in underwriting and as an area manager at VACC, CGU (South East Queensland). From 2003 to 2012, he got into broking and eventually started Dixon Insurance in 2013. Since then, he’s accumulated numerous acccolades, including Elite Broker, Diversity and Equity, and Fast Broker awards.
During the pandemic, Dixon challenged insurers over the Quarantine Act application to insurance wordings. His argument was that the Quarantine Act does not apply as an exclusion, as the Biosecurity Act was invoked by the Morrison Government, and this was not a subsequent amendment to the Quarantine Act. The test case in the Appeals court was won for Dixon’s client with a unanimous five-judge verdict.
He remains focused on transport, manufacturing, motor trade, engineering and large farm clients.
What are his plans for the future?
On a business level, “more of the same. I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes.”
On a personal level, Dixon invests significant time, effort and funds, along with his GT3, to support many charities through his passion for motorsport. From participating in and sponsoring the Thunderbolt Run (which provides tens of thousands of dollars in support for Beyond Blue and Prostate Cancer), to organising and running the Track Knights for Amira charity night where 28 Exotic Supercars raised funds through passenger laps in wet conditions, Dixon states “this is our time to give back to the community and those in need. My friendships and association with those seeking to do the same, allows us to contribute to those less fortunate and raise funds and awareness”.
He adds: “To be able to give back to the community is rewarding and fulfilling. I am honoured to be in a position where I can raise funds for those less fortunate and in need.”
