“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Pete Nicholson has nearly 25 years of experience working in global environments. “I have been fortunate to work across a broad range of industries and roles in finance and operations in Australia, Europe and the United States, learning a lot from a diverse range of people in a wide range of cultures,” he says. “This experience has broadened my leadership style and established a core set of values that really drive me to care about each and every person who is a part of our business.” In 2022, Nicholson was appointed chief executive of Gallagher Bassett (GB) Australia. Over the past year, he led GB as they extended their contract with Worksafe Victoria by two years to 2025, renewed their icare General Lines and HBCF contracts, and were selected as one of the providers to the icare Nominal Insurer Scheme. During this time, GB also celebrated its 20-year anniversary as a workers’ compensation agent for WorkSafe Victoria and 15 years of the Gentle Bear CSR program, in which over 15,000 teddies have been donated to law enforcement agencies worldwide.
Nicholson and GB’s awards include Insurance Business Best Service Provider Excellence Award 2020, Insurance Asia Awards Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Year 2020, Insurance Business 5-Star Insurance Innovator 2021, HRD Australia 5-Star Employer of Choice 2022, and one of Ethisphere Institute’s World’s Most Ethical Companies 2011–2022.
What’s more, he is an energetic and authentic leader, guiding businesses growth and outcomes in a consistent, engaging, and transparent fashion.
“I believe that every business decision needs to be made with people very much at the forefront of my mind and it’s something that I religiously adhere to,” he adds. “I believe this applies to both our staff and our customers. Whether it’s a member of my leadership team or one of our highly skilled, professional and empathetic claims managers, it’s my responsibility to help them feel connected to GB’s vision and to help create opportunities for them to learn and grow.”
As Australia’s largest and most trusted multi-line third party claims administrator (TPA), GB provides a complete range of claims management and consulting solutions, including workers’ compensation, general insurance, self-insurance, and advisory services. Drawing on its global network and extensive local resources, it provides customised claim and risk mitigation solutions that improve its clients’ outcomes. GB introduced the TPA model to the local insurance industry. As pioneers in this fast-growing sector, the company continues to set the benchmark for quality, customer service and TPA systems across all insurance sectors.
How did Nicholson get started at GB? He spent 10 years leading financial service organisation across Europe and North America, then, in 2012, he returned to Australia. In 2015, he completed a senior leadership development program at the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland. And In 2017, Nicholson was appointed the Australian CFO of GB.
In his first year at GB, Nicholson also supported the establishment of GB in the Northern Territory (NT), providing workers’ compensation services to the NT government agencies. His wealth of knowledge and deep expertise in global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) resulted in him quickly being promoted to the role of CFO – GB International in 2018, leading M&A internationally. That same year, he helped expand GB in Tasmania. As a result of his actions, GB now maintains an office in every state and territory across Australia.
