“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Shaun Standfield is the managing director of Insurance Advisernet. A senior insurance executive with expertise gained from working for large insurance companies in Australia and across Asia, Standfield leads a large brokerage with operations in over 260 locations across Australia and New Zealand; the company places more than $1.2 billion of premium.
“The role of insurance advisers has never been more important or required,” says Standfield. “The world is getting more complex and having a trusted insurance professional working with you is a ‘must have.’
Insurance brokers write more than 50% of the premium in the Australian market and complaints to [the Australian Financial Complaints Authority] continue to decrease from brokers. Why? Because brokers understand the nuances of each business and work to tailor insurance programs that meet each client’s appetite for risk acceptance and mitigation.
“I see technology as an enabler, not the panacea, to customers buying insurance. Our role is to provide the tools to allow our advisers to spend more time with their customers. In simple terms, I believe in leading a team that creates win-win-win outcomes for clients, our advisers and Insurance Advisernet.”
The strength of Insurance Advisernet is also derived from its partnership with ASX-listed AUB Group, which empowers and supports the team 100% in executing their strategic plans.
Standfield takes immense pleasure from assisting individuals to grow their own business and from advisers building assets for themselves and their families.
“I see myself as a provocative leader who always pushes to change the status quo,” he says. “Ultimately, I care about people and in a business sense I feel enormous responsibility to ensure I protect and grow our advisers’ businesses along with opportunities for the team I lead to have personal growth opportunities. Being provocative does create uncomfortable moments at times, but we need to keep moving the business forward and status quo isn’t the answer or an option.”
Standfield has an active interest in the not-for-profit sector, having chaired the QBE Foundation in Australia & Asia and a long association with KidsXpress and in recent years with the Insurance Advisernet Foundation.
He holds an MBA, Bachelor of Business, Advanced Diploma in Financial Services (Broking), and Graduate Diploma in Management. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
