“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Anita Cheng seized unexpected opportunities that led her to pursue a career in sports insurance, one of her biggest passions from growing up in a collegiate sports family.
The claims consultant at Sportscover has excelled at managing tight deadlines during peak sports seasons by ensuring she and her team meet all deliverables without compromising work quality and achieving client satisfaction.
Insurance Business Australia recognised Cheng’s achievements with a 2024 Rising Star award, honouring her adaptability and ability to pivot quickly in the fast-paced insurance environment to meet the industry’s and customers’ changing demands.
“In my current role, we faced an unexpected market shift that required us to revise our strategy. I led the team in assessing our options and quickly implemented a new approach aligned with the new market conditions,” Cheng says. “We met our targets and gained valuable insights that informed our long-term strategy. That experience reinforced my belief in the importance of being flexible and open to change.”
Cheng is known for her positive attitude and for collaborating with her team to tackle challenges that push her growth and development.
She says, “Looking at my overall career, I’m focused on continuous learning and making meaningful contributions to my field. I see my current position as a crucial stepping stone towards advancing into a leadership role where I can drive strategic initiatives and mentor others.”
Cheng considers the successful handling of a challenging quadriplegia claim early in her sports insurance career as her proudest accomplishment to date.
“I was responsible for analysing our existing policy with the sporting club and identifying products that the client may be eligible for, ensuring we show the best care as an insurance company,” she says. “I initiated a cross-departmental collaboration to streamline my workflow and utilised shared platforms for communication to reduce repetitive tasks. I settled the capital benefit at $250,000 and maintained effective communication with the client’s family.”
She credits her proactive attitude towards learning and the support she has received from mentors for her impressive career start. Whether through online courses or taking on challenging projects at work, Cheng seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge. Mentors’ guidance and insights helped her overcome challenges and take risks, leading to rewarding experiences.
With a focus on building her reputation as a skilled communicator who emphasises collaboration, Cheng volunteered to lead a comprehensive claim that required cross-departmental cooperation. This initiative showcased her leadership potential and helped her to build valuable relationships across the organisation.
“While I’m still early in my journey, I’ve found that my fresh perspective allows me to approach problems creatively,” she says. “During a recent team project, I suggested a new approach to our workflow based on recent trends I had studied in my coursework. This idea was well-received and improved our efficiency.”
Being named to IB’s Rising Star list has given Cheng greater confidence in her abilities and a deeper appreciation for the impact of effective collaboration.
“I’ve become more ambitious in my career aims,” she says. “I’m now focused on seeking out leadership opportunities where I can guide teams and drive strategic initiatives. Moving forward, I aim to develop my leadership skills further and contribute to projects that have a meaningful impact on the organisation.”
