“Adopting the UN SDG as a roadmap for change, Grammar embarked on an ambitious journey to create change locally. Through developing partnerships with local businesses, council and community agencies, we continue to grow as a hub of sustainable practice,” says Anna Owen.
A key to the success of the program is how it responds to the changing needs of the school and local community.
“Through regular engagement with local charity, business and environmental partners, we have evolved over time,” says Anna Owen. “The addition of a curriculum focus on SDG and a range of extension activities, including ambassadorships and passion projects has been well received by the school community.”
Sunshine Coast mentors all of its students via Primary and Secondary Service teams and also Green teams, which enables all of its pupils to engage with an ecosystem of talent and learning.
Anna Owen says, “Students not only have a wide array of service and sustainability projects on offer during the school year but can also elect to take on a passion project of their own, aligning their own passion with the UN SDG and working towards creating tangible change for people and planet.”
Taking its efforts far beyond the campus, Sunshine Coast has been working closely with a range of community and school groups in Timor Leste since 2015.
These efforts are ongoing with plans to drive further development of SDG in an educational setting in Timor, and further support for local rural communities is planned, particularly with a focus on health and education of girls.
“In supporting these initiatives, alongside the future development of the Grammar Global Giving initiative – a program designed to repurpose school and sporting equipment for communities in the Pacific region – we envisage strong support and beneficial outcomes for our sustainability programs,” says Anna Owen.
