“My strongest professional quality is my ability to build trust and long-term relationships, whether with clients, colleagues, or stakeholders”

Cameron Copeland, president and CEO of SPG Canada, is an authority in specialty insurance and the MGA model – a space that rewards underwriting discipline, rigorous analysis, creativity, speed, and decisive leadership. Copeland focuses on making an impact by building platforms, assembling talent, aligning resources, and creating durable systems designed to outperform market cycles.
“I believe in clear positioning — no ambiguity about appetite, pricing discipline, or capacity. Brokers and carrier partners value consistency. Even when the answer is ‘no,’ it needs to be reasoned and timely,” he says.
Under Copeland’s leadership, SPG Canada has expanded rapidly through acquisitions, amalgamations, new verticals, digitization, and geographic growth. He is acutely aware that such acceleration can lead to fragmentation, cultural drift, and operational complexity.
Copeland’s answer is a disciplined, threefold approach:
1) He insists on clarity of strategy and ruthless prioritization so the business does not chase every opportunity.
2) He treats culture as infrastructure, ensuring that values scale alongside headcount and geography.
3) He favours systems over heroics – integrated technology, ERP incorporation, strong governance, underwriting discipline, and data transparency that support people and sustain performance.
“We pursue aggressive growth targets, but we pair that with underwriting rigor, governance, and long-term capital discipline,” Copeland comments. “We are accountable to ourselves and each other. I also focus heavily on culture as a competitive advantage.”
His signature achievement has been transforming a group of strong regional MGAs into a national, integrated specialty insurance platform with scale, credibility, and momentum.
When Copeland stepped into leadership, SPG Canada’s brands and expertise were impressive but decentralized. Under his guidance, the organization has consolidated multiple legacy brands under one national identity, expanded into new specialty verticals and built one of the strongest underwriting and claims capabilities in the Canadian MGA space. Perhaps most importantly, he has helped attract and retain top talent, creating a platform designed to outlast any leader, including himself.
Professionally, Copeland’s standout quality is strategic conviction. “I am comfortable making decisive calls in uncertain markets, whether that means leaning into a hard market, retooling for a soft market, investing in technology before it is convenient, acquiring businesses during volatility, or redefining culture when we are experiencing disruption,” he says.
Rather than reacting to cycles, he positions SPG Canada ahead of them. He couples this with a people-centred mindset, deliberately surrounding himself with strong leaders and empowering them.
That blend of ambition and discipline shapes his broader philosophy: leadership as stewardship and service. He adds, “If I leave anything behind, I want it to be momentum – an organization and an industry segment that is more ambitious, more disciplined, and more future-ready than it was before.”
In a sector often seen as conservative, Copeland views specialty insurance in Canada as entering a period of profound transformation, driven by digitization, data, AI, consolidation, and evolving risks and regulation. His aim is not simply to respond but to prove that Canadian MGAs can lead in technology adoption, underwriting sophistication, and enterprise scale.
