Jean-François Chalifoux, president and CEO of Beneva, has built an impressive career track record by consistently pursuing broad, cross-functional expertise, mastering both property and casualty insurance and life and health insurance, as well as key levers such as operations, marketing, strategy, and customer experience.
This deliberate pursuit of a 360° view of the Canadian insurance landscape has given Chalifoux an unusually integrated grasp of the business and its social role. He is leading Canada’s largest mutual insurer at a time when customer expectations, technology, and risk profiles are evolving at unprecedented speed.
Chalifoux’s central goal is to keep Beneva, which has $27.5 billion in assets and 3.5 million members, true to its mutualist roots, while modernizing and expanding the organization’s reach to new segments.
He does so by holding a delicate balance between member services, employee well-being, and community engagement, even as he reshapes its business model, invests in innovation, and evolves the brand to be accessible and appealing to a broader audience.
The defining achievement of his career to date has been orchestrating the historic coming together of La Capitale and SSQ Insurance to create Beneva in 2020. Uniting two strong mutuals with distinct cultures and legacies was a complex human and organizational undertaking. Under his leadership, the integration preserved the mutualist DNA of both organizations while establishing a single, modern, high-performing enterprise. This track record of successful transformation has been reinforced by Beneva’s continued growth, including its recently announced merger with Gore Mutual, further strengthening the presence and relevance of mutual insurers in Canada.
Colleagues highlight Chalifoux’s exceptional adaptability as a core leadership asset. He has led adeptly through major mergers, rapid growth phases, recovery situations, and high-performance environments, adjusting his management approach to each context without losing strategic clarity. This flexibility enables him to quickly read complex situations, refocus priorities, and mobilize teams around clear objectives, even amid uncertainty.
His leadership style is that of a conductor: he sets the course, aligns diverse talents, and ensures that every function plays in harmony toward shared goals. At the same time, he is deeply respectful of the expertise around him, striving to create the conditions where each individual can excel. That philosophy extends outward to Beneva’s members and partners. Chalifoux insists on transparent and accountable communication, acknowledging challenges, and listening actively to the real-life experiences behind every policy.
Operating from Quebec and doing business all across Canada, Chalifoux has created an environment at Beneva renowned for financial stability coupled with a strong tradition of cooperation and mutualism. This has reinforced his belief that insurance should remain fundamentally in service of communities.
As part of the Insurance Business Global 100 for 2026, he seeks to leave a legacy of an industry that proves strong performance can and should go hand-in-hand with mutual support, solidarity, collaboration, and integrity.
