Born and raised in Scotland, Jamie Ross Dick worked as a carpenter and site foreman before immigrating to Canada over 10 years ago. He began his career in insurance in 2013 as a P&C underwriter before choosing to specialize in construction, an industry where his hands-on knowledge and expertise could be applied on a daily basis. Lions Gate Underwriting is a global MGA with a team of more than 20 in Canada. It has offices in Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa and its operations extend from coast to coast to coast. The company currently specializes in several key product lines: construction, property, casualty, professional liability, and accident and health. LGU is a full-service solution for brokerages of all sizes and risks of all complexities. While construction has been a focus since the company’s inception, the team has seen tremendous growth and success across the business over the past six years.
“LGU offers end-to-end solutions for construction risks, providing coverage for projects in various stages throughout the construction process,” says Jamie Ross Dick, the company’s director of construction.
“Whether it’s property coverage for buildings scheduled for demolition, ground up course of constructions, wrap-up and/or premises liability, even environmental liability, LGU wants to be with our brokers every step of the way. LGU has exclusive domestic and Lloyd’s capacity in-house which allows our team to offer unique solutions to our brokers, quickly and effectively. Beyond our existing in-house capacity, LGU has excellent open market relationships, helping us find a home for those complex, hard-to-place construction risks.”
LGU’s strategy has always been to use its technical expertise to its advantage by underwriting risks that the company understands and continuing to build capacity in the niches that it knows best.
“Being entrepreneurial in spirit, LGU has remained nimble through the market’s ebbs and flows and the ability to adjust to these fluctuations quickly and with relative ease has positioned us well for considerable growth. We have seen record-breaking years in both 2020 and 2021 and most recently saw June of 2022 close with our highest income bound in Lions Gate’s history,” says Meagan Woensdregt, managing director and head of underwriting.
Despite the unprecedented growth that LGU has experienced under the leadership of Brian Gomes, president and Woensdregt, the team remains humble and driven to produce results for its brokers and deliver on its promises.
“LGU feels incredibly accomplished in the growth that we’ve seen in recent years, however, what we are most proud of is our people and the team dynamics that we’ve built,” Gomes says. “We plan to continue investing in our people who are our greatest asset, as well as increasing our underwriting capacity and expanding our network of brokers to provide the most effective solutions. We will continue to utilize a dynamic blend of specialist human capital and technology to ensure we are delivering in an efficient way while always evolving.”
“Now, we have much more frequent recognition awards because we want to celebrate people staying at CAAT and recognize the contributions that they bring to the organization”
