Chris Pauli is executive vice president, construction for Buildersure, Canada’s leading construction underwriting team, backed by a unique combination of i3 Underwriting and Cansure construction expertise. He began his insurance career at Key Insurance in 2003, a locally owned retail brokerage based in British Columbia that had a successful relationship with Lloyd’s. During his time there, Pauli honed his skills as an underwriter and learned the nuances of Lloyd’s along the way. In 2008, he started i3 Underwriting along with two other partners. Predominantly backed by Lloyd’s of London, i3 Underwriting is a full-service MGA. At the outset, Pauli was tasked with growing their successful construction division. In 2020, i3 was acquired by Cansure during the heart of the pandemic, leading Pauli to his current role, where he heads a team of 27 dedicated construction employees.

As Canada’s largest managing general agent (MGA), SPG Canada combines nearly nine decades of expertise with a relentless focus on innovation and client service. The company’s culture is built on the belief that long-term success comes from adapting alongside its customers’ evolving needs. Guided by seven core values – including entrepreneurship, creativity, inclusion, accountability, balance, and community stewardship – SPG Canada fosters a workplace where collaboration, open communication, and empowerment are at the forefront.
“Our team operates with an entrepreneurial mindset that encourages accountability, creativity, and a sense of ownership,” says Cameron Copeland, president of SPGC, who oversees all SPGC MGA brands. “This approach enables us to deliver consistent, high-quality results for our broker partners and clients.”
SPG Canada’s leadership blends diverse backgrounds and deep industry experience. The construction division is headed by Chris Pauli, EVP Construction, and one of the founding partners of i3 Underwriting, a legacy SPGC MGA brand. Their leadership philosophy empowers underwriters to make timely decisions, nurture strong broker relationships, and respond quickly to market trends.
In recent years, the company has undertaken a major enterprise resource planning (ERP) transformation to unify its legacy systems into a single platform. This investment streamlines operations, enhances data integration across claims and underwriting, strengthens broker and carrier relationships, and supports more robust performance analytics. Growth has also been fueled by the January 2025 amalgamation of Totten Insurance and Anderson McTague into the SPG Canada family of brands, expanding its national reach and product offering.
