SPG Canada has built its reputation on taking on the risks the standard market has already walked away from, a specialty that earned it a 5-Star MGA designation in Insurance Business Canada’s 2026 Brokers on MGAs report. Brokers surveyed for the report specifically pointed to the company’s willingness to work with clients who present a more complicated history, calling out that appetite as a deliberate strength.
“I think our two core assets are our people and our product,” says Cameron Copeland, president of SPG Canada, based in Vancouver. “It’s how we use our people and our product in these situations and what makes us different in doing so.”
The people side comes from experience across multiple market cycles, with many underwriters having worked inside standard carriers before learning where and how to step outside that lane for a client who needs it. The mechanics behind that flexibility involve a deliberate rebalancing of risk. Copeland describes structuring deals so a client retains just enough exposure to stay financially aligned with SPG Canada, while the company accepts the portion the client genuinely can’t absorb.
That risk is then spread further through subscription, sharing a single account across multiple carriers instead of concentrating it with one insurer. “If we get it wrong, one carrier isn’t paying the full brunt of the loss,” he says, calling the subscription model “a genuinely strategic part of the business.” Pricing discipline runs on the same logic. Copeland points to SPG Canada’s own claims and pricing history as its guide, what he calls the business’s “North Star” for understanding true loss cost even when softer market conditions tempt competitors to underprice. That data lets underwriters flex on coverage and deductible structure to stay competitive without abandoning the numbers.
That capability sits on top of a national platform built through the merger of seven legacy MGA brands, including Cansure, i3 Underwriting, Totten Insurance Group, Beacon, Anderson McTague & Associates, Mode, and Avro, under the unified SPG Canada name. The company describes itself as Canada’s largest delegated underwriting authority enterprise, led by a small leadership group charged with ensuring scale and specialty work together. It employs more than 600 people out of head offices in Vancouver and Toronto, supported by an in-house claims division, Specialty Claims Canada.
That same discipline shapes how SPG Canada prioritizes its time. With renewals now underwritten with the same rigour as new business, the company has chosen to focus where it can add the most value: existing relationships and files that need real problem-solving, and it’s direct with brokers about how to get the fastest read on a new submission. Copeland's advice is simple. A focused submission sent to SPG Canada alone, framed as a specific problem to solve, moves faster than one blasted to half a dozen MGAs at once. The result is a company brokers call when a standard answer won’t cut it, a reputation borne out by its own brokers naming it a 2026 5-Star MGA.
