Erika Schiavoni's career was influenced by her values and goals early on, leading her to pursue opportunities that allowed her to thrive. She established a successful career trajectory by focusing on what matters most and creating routines that achieve work-life balance.
“I understand now that I can only do great work if all my needs are met, and this means having time to take care of myself and my family,” she notes about the change in her mindset that she considers the most significant career achievement.
As the assistant vice president of OneTD Strategies for TD Insurance (TDI), Schiavoni drove the growth of TDI general insurance and its line of life and health businesses. The insurance professional, who has also made her mark at international financial institutions, is known for her integrity, empathy, listening skills, and courage in standing by her convictions. Her peers recognize her unwavering commitment to deepening and strengthening client relationships in her work at TDI.
Schiavoni joined the organization in 2016 as senior manager on the TDI general insurance product management team and quickly established herself as a thoughtful leader with a deep passion for customer experience. She implemented the national affinity retention strategy and the Ontario gender-neutral pricing strategy, which helped better serve the company’s clients in these groups.
Before her current role, Schiavoni was the assistant vice president and chief of staff for the group head of wealth and insurance, providing counsel, analytics, and decision support.
Regardless of Schiavoni's role, she anchors herself on several fundamental principles she regards as her professional foundation. She believes work is meaningful when one cares about what they’re doing, the people with whom they’re doing it, and the communities in which they live.
She values patience because it allows her to connect better with others and gain consensus on pressing issues. Staying grounded in her beliefs enables her to tie her actions back to her core values. And finally, viewing setbacks as learning experiences has paved the way for Schiavoni to dream big and take risks.
“I am grounded in logic and have an analytical mindset, and it’s important for me to understand the ‘why’,” she explains. “If people can understand that they'll sign up to do the unimaginable and choose extraordinary over ordinary.”
The biggest challenge in her current role is prioritizing flexibility and paying it the attention it deserves, particularly regarding collaboration and finding the best solutions. She acknowledges that building trust between management and employees is essential for creating safe spaces for experimentation, and she constantly strives to maintain an open and transparent environment. Hence, the efforts of all align with the organization's purpose.
Schiavoni has an honours degree in finance from the Pan-American University in Mexico, and a master’s degree from HEC Montreal.She has worked at Aviva Canada, Citibank, and other financial institutions in Mexico, Central America, and Canada, where she held various senior positions in investing, corporate finance, operations, and strategy.
