Alexander Rei believes in making a positive difference while inspiring others to reach the pinnacle of success.
For the business development manager (BDM) at Echelon Insurance, being recognized as a Rising Star of 2023 has bolstered his confidence about the positive impact he can have in the industry and how far he can progress in his career.
Rei achieved his dream job as a BDM before turning 30 and takes the position seriously, striving to be the best for colleagues, broker partners, and himself. His tireless work ethic, high standards, and unshakeable resilience have helped him build a solid reputation in his field.
He credits his success to the guidance of several mentors, including his father, Roberto Rei, and business leaders Joseph Gagliano, Kamran Afshar, and Michael Politis, who taught him strong leadership skills, business acumen, and encouraged him early on to put in the effort and strive for greatness.
“It’s extremely important to align yourself with people who can lead by example, create new connections and opportunities for you, and inspire you to dream big and work hard toward realizing your goals,” he explains.
Rei’s father advised him to gain experience on the industry’s company and broker sides to develop the skills needed to think like an underwriter and build relationships with brokers while focusing on problem-solving and accountability to deliver results.
He worked in underwriting for two years, obtained his RIBO license and worked for four years as a personal lines broker before feeling ready to take on a BDM role.
The challenge in his current role is to broaden brokers’ perspectives on his company’s personal and commercial lines products, an endeavour in which he excels by conducting in-person and online training with broker partners.
Rei aims to create “unexpectedly spectacular moments” and surpass expectations as a BDM while advocating for his broker partners.
He considers the advice to “be curious and be a sponge” the best he has received and passes that on to other aspiring insurance professionals. He regularly takes educational courses that broaden his knowledge and allow him to have more meaningful conversations with industry colleagues.
“I am deeply grateful to all my peers who took the time to nominate me; these people continually show their belief in me and want to see me succeed,” he adds. “I will continue to make a positive difference and inspire others.”
