“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Linda Buckton didn’t plan on an insurance career, but when she accepted her first job in a claims department over 20 years ago, she knew it was the right fit immediately.
Today, as vice president, client executive, in the Calgary, Alberta, office of BFL CANADA, she leverages her creativity and high service standards in overseeing client service.
A key driving factor to Buckton’s success lies in her client-centric approach, focusing on building meaningful relationships and always acting in the client’s best interest.
“I enjoy getting to know my clients and like to build on those relationships year over year,” she says. “With my background and time in claims, I believe this gives me a well-rounded perspective for my clients, as I have seen the worst-case scenario happen.”
Buckton works in production, focusing on niche areas such as programs and affinity business. One of her main challenges is keeping coverages and premiums competitive and in line, as the availability of markets and coverages has fluctuated over the past few years. Her resilience and adaptability enable her to navigate these scenarios, delivering proper coverage and competitive rates.
She says, “We take the time to get to know our clients and their businesses and then develop a unique program for them. We continually work and build on that program as their business, the economy, the insurance market, and other variables ebb and flow.”
When attracting and retaining clients, Buckton explores every avenue and has driven organic growth through client referrals. She and her team regularly participate in requests for proposals and attend association conferences, an approach that supports connecting with clients at multiple touch points throughout the year to forge lasting relationships.
“We spend a lot of time talking to prospects and ensuring we have a solid understanding of their industry, their business, and how they run their business,” Buckton says. “We ask them their business goals and ambitions, and we take that information and build an insurance solution uniquely tailored for them.”
One of Buckton’s proudest achievements was obtaining her chartered insurance professional (CIP) and chartered risk management (CRM) designations while working full-time and raising her young children. She also holds a Level 2 Agent license and is a Level 3 Adjuster in the province.
She says, “Studying would happen after the kids were in bed. It took me a few years, so there’s a genuine sense of accomplishment. These designations gave me a strong foundational knowledge base, which has helped me build my book of business.”
IBC recognized Buckton as a Top Insurance Broker of 2024, paying tribute to her track record of client service excellence and underlying philosophy that insurance should be fun and informative.
“I am proud to work for a Canadian company owned by its employees,” she says. “I love collaborating with my colleagues from coast to coast and working on multiple programs. Having access to a large number of insurers certainly makes my job easier. We have a large commercial team, and I couldn’t do what I do without them.”
