“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Tracy Sutton began her career as a registered nurse, drawn to the field by an interest in health from a young age. But after experiencing burnout as a critical care nurse, she knew she needed a change.
She turned her qualifications and experience in primary healthcare into a pathway to personal injury claims management, her first step into the insurance industry.
“What an eye-opening experience it was,” she says. “Not long into my insurance career, I secured an entry-level leadership/management role, where I quickly discovered my strengths. I was recognised as a future leader within the QBE business and was privileged to be offered support and guidance through various leadership and business programs.”
In July 2022, Sutton took on her biggest career challenge yet by stepping into the general manager role for the Workers’ Compensation division at Warren Saunders Insurance Brokers.
During a period of internal company changes, she suddenly found herself responsible for managing people, processes and performance in an uncertain environment. She focused on supporting her team instead of letting the pressure overwhelm her.
She says, “I focused on ensuring my direct reports felt supported, motivating them according to their individual needs and workplace drivers.”
Her focus on support and leadership helped create a positive workplace culture. Through her efforts, her team became more engaged, motivated and satisfied in their roles, something she considers one of her proudest achievements.
In recognition of her impact on her team, organisation, and the industry, IB named Sutton an Elite Woman of 2025.
As much as Sutton thrives in leadership, she’s the first to admit that balancing career ambitions with family life is an ongoing challenge. With a husband who also works in the insurance industry and two young boys, ages 12 and 8, life is busy.
“Our household is busy and active, and striking that balance between career drive and family commitments is always a work in progress,” she says.
She makes it work by constantly adjusting, prioritising where she’s most needed and staying present. It’s not always easy, but she believes that success is about managing it the best you can.
Her leadership skills shone, especially in creating an environment where people felt valued, respected and motivated to do their best work. Sutton believes in leading with honesty, building trust and fostering a culture where collaboration is front and centre.
Her mantra of “Do what you say you’re going to do and do it well” underpins a philosophy that has shaped her entire career and applies it in everything she does.
While Sutton hasn’t personally encountered significant barriers as a woman in the industry, she knows that more women need to be in leadership roles.
She says, “As we have seen at Warren Saunders Insurance Brokers, where 60% of the management team are females, having a diverse and inclusive team strengthens the internal culture and drives innovation and responsiveness.”
She’s passionate about mentorship and professional development and actively supports men and women in reaching their full potential, believing the latter can excel in any role they set their minds to.
Sutton hopes to leave behind a legacy of fairness and integrity so that others feel empowered to make informed decisions about their careers in insurance and leadership. She wants to be remembered for what she accomplished and how she helped others succeed.
