Profile
Lisa Mitchell is head of claims at Markel Australia.
Far from following a neatly mapped-out trajectory, her journey has been shaped by a determination to overcome structural barriers, international moves and the realities of raising a family – and at every turn, she has found a way not just to progress but also to elevate the environments around her.
The move from Mitchell’s home in the UK, where she worked as a solicitor, to Australia underlines her tenacity. Faced with a new legal system, a different culture, limited childcare support and no family network, she effectively built her professional standing from the ground up.
She did so while remaining an active, present mother, often “only really breaking even” financially but persisting because it was the route to her long-term goals. That persistence is central to why she is regarded as an elite performer: she has stayed the course, succeeding in environments that were not designed with her success in mind.
In her current role, Mitchell has to manage the balance between technical complexity and the relationship side of the job. Her strong belief is that breaking down silos is essential.
“Insurance relies heavily on trust, clarity and cooperation,” she says. “Maintaining that across multiple stakeholders isn’t always easy. I deal with it by staying adaptable and grounded. Clear communication, steady delivery and being someone people can rely on are the cornerstones of how I work.”
In addition, leading across geographies and time zones, she has absorbed the personal strains that come with global responsibility while building deep, trusted relationships that now deliver long-term benefits in the form of stronger collaboration and local empowerment.
Mitchell is the kind of leader who consistently leaves processes, projects and team dynamics better than she found them. Her approach is steady, collaborative and practical; she does not chase visibility but rather focuses on adding value, doing the work, and keeping things moving in the right direction.
She adds, “I’m someone who does their research and won’t act before I’ve assimilated a lot of information and have weighed up different solutions.”
While Mitchell does not seek the role model mantle, she recognises the importance of visibility and uses her platform to challenge outdated assumptions about women’s interests, capabilities and career paths. Her definition of success is grounded, not in titles, but in doing meaningful work, within a team you value, as part of something that feels special.
“I’m just one representation. There are so many capable, impressive women in our industry, and we all bring something different to the table. What I bring is consistency, commitment and a genuine desire to add value, wherever I am,” explains Mitchell. “I’ve built a career in environments that didn’t always expect women to thrive, and I’ve done so with resilience, adaptability and a focus on constructive relationships.”

As a founding member of WOW! (Women. Opportunity. Winning.), an employee resource group created for all women of Ryan Specialty, Phillips Topping has long championed for women in the industry.
“It’s very important to set an example and to not only inspire but mentor other females,” she adds.
In addition to her sharp marketing eye, the key to Phillips Topping’s success lies in her high-energy approach and positive attitude.
“As the leader of a team, it’s important to motivate and encourage your team members. People work very hard and do their best and it’s important to recognize these efforts. For my career overall, my attitude has been one of curiosity. The more you can learn, the better you’ll understand the business, and then the deeper your knowledge will become, making you a better team member.”

A significant part of his focus today is staying ahead of regulatory change while maintaining a seamless client experience. He tracks updates from regulators and lenders closely and works with his teams to adjust systems as needed.
“My approach to my role and my career has always been rooted in passion, focus, and a relentless pursuit of excellence,” he says. “I’ve never been driven solely by profit or business metrics. I believe in hiring great talent, trusting them, and pushing boundaries because innovation doesn’t come from playing it safe.”
His experience isn’t limited to Canada. Ibrahim has worked in the US and UAE, which shaped his global perspective and comfort with adapting to different markets. He thrives on risk, viewing setbacks as stepping stones to progress.
“I’ve always believed that if you love what you do, you’ll never settle, and that attitude has guided every decision I’ve made,” he adds.
That outlook continues to guide his work and reflects his broader goal of helping move the industry forward. Through his brokerage, lending company, and legal services, Ibrahim is focused on creating long-term value for his clients, his teams, and others working in the field.
