Travel insurance that means business

Allianz Partners offers a flexible plan for professionals, covering medical needs, disruptions and mixed-purpose trips, with options tailored for frequent flyers

BUSINESS TRAVELLERS face mounting pressures as global mobility increases and disruptions become more common. Medical emergencies abroad, cancelled flights, lost baggage and political evacuations create significant risks for companies sending staff overseas.
Business travel has grown more unpredictable, with health scares, natural disasters and logistical chaos adding fresh layers of risk. Allianz Partners has a business travel insurance policy option for corporate travellers that meets this moment with wide-ranging coverage and built-in flexibility. It’s engineered for the modern work trip – where leisure often overlaps, itineraries shift, and no two journeys are quite the same.
“Whether it’s rescheduling a flight due to a hurricane or receiving treatment after a sudden illness overseas, the policy is designed to help business travellers stay focused on work, not worry,” says David Wallace, sales director at Allianz Partners in New Zealand.
Based in Auckland, Allianz Partners New Zealand employs more than 100 staff, specialising locally in providing and managing assistance services, travel insurance, student insurance and pet insurance through our New Zealand and international business partners. Our strength lies in combining the solidarity and trust that comes with being part of an established global organisation with the local expertise of our New Zealand team.

The technical aspects of coverage represent a significant consideration for brokers advising clients on business travel insurance.
“Unlimited overseas medical expenses form the cornerstone of our policy, ensuring that travellers receive necessary treatment without financial barriers,” says Wallace.
He emphasises that the policy extends beyond basic medical coverage. The 24/7 worldwide medical and travel emergency assistance service connects travellers directly with medical experts and travel specialists, while medical benefits also extend to accompanying persons on business trips.
Additional technical features include loss of deposits, missed connection compensation, travel delay benefits, and cost of resumption of travel or alternative staff arrangements. “Repatriation and evacuation benefits, personal liability coverage, loss of income, rental vehicle excess cover and search and rescue provisions for natural disasters ensure comprehensive cover,” Wallace explains.
Business travel rarely follows rigid schedules, with many trips incorporating leisure elements. Surveys show that blending work with leisure has become more common post-pandemic in line with flexible work becoming more normalised. More companies allow employees to take extended trips abroad while working since more employees no longer work in an office in the first place, for example.
The Allianz Partners business travel policy acknowledges this reality through specific provisions for mixed-purpose travel. “We recognise that not every trip is strictly business, so the policy allows for limited leisure travel provided the primary purpose of the trip is business,” Wallace says.
The practical application involves specific guidelines for brokers and their clients. Approximately one-third of trip duration can be allocated to leisure activities, such as extending a business trip over a weekend to attend local events or explore destinations.
Wallace recommends that brokers ensure clients understand these limits and disclose mixed-purpose trips in advance to avoid coverage complications. This transparency helps maintain policy validity while accommodating realistic travel patterns.
The global reach of Allianz Partners enables access to local expertise in diverse international markets, ensuring that emergency response reflects local conditions and requirements rather than attempting remote coordination from New Zealand.
Recent claims experience illustrates the practical importance of comprehensive business travel coverage. “Most customers travelling under our policies complete their journeys without needing to utilise our services, but for those that do, the coverage and support becomes vital to their welfare and financial outcomes,” Wallace says.
Pre-travel cancellations due to unexpected medical diagnoses and treatment requirements have increased, creating financial exposure for both travellers and employers. Business-related travel expenses often exceed personal travel costs, making comprehensive coverage particularly important.
Wallace describes recent cases where travellers experienced medical events overseas that highlighted the value of global support networks. “Not only are the, at times astronomical, costs of medical events and the follow-on impacts on travel plans covered, but the regular support from the Allianz team checking in on customers and ensuring that their needs are being met provides reassurance for those stranded in hospitals overseas awaiting recovery and repatriation home.”
One case involved Mark Drew, a seasoned ultra-marathon athlete who developed severe altitude sickness while trekking to Everest Base Camp. With his oxygen saturation level dropping to a dangerously low 70%, Drew required emergency airlift from the mountain for urgent medical care. His Allianz travel insurance covered the substantial costs of the helicopter evacuation and subsequent treatment. His case clearly demonstrates the ability to provide support across the globe, and unlimited medical coverage was key to giving Drew the reassurance and recovery he needed.
The combination of financial coverage and personal support addresses both immediate medical needs and the broader implications of extended overseas medical treatment.

The policy structure addresses common business travel scenarios where standard personal travel insurance falls short.
Comprehensive medical coverage addresses primary concerns
The Frequent Flyer plan represents a tailored solution for individuals who travel regularly for business purposes. “The Frequent Flyer plan covers unlimited trips per year, with each trip capped at 90 days, offering seamless cover for those who are always on the go,” Wallace says.
The plan includes identical benefits and limits to the Platinum plan while providing greater flexibility for frequent travellers.
Two country plan options accommodate different business travel patterns: Australia & South Pacific coverage for regional business operations, and Worldwide regions for global business activities. The structure allows companies to match coverage to their specific travel requirements without paying for unnecessary geographical coverage.
Frequent Flyer option suits regular business travellers
Expedia Group’s annual Traveler Value Index shows consumers are increasingly planning for flexcations and ‘bleisure’ trips. Flexcations, or a trip where you work remotely for at least some portion of your leisure trip, have seen the biggest increase, with 44% planning for a flexcation trip in the next 12 months. More people are also including vacation at the start or end of their business trips; 42% of consumers are planning bleisure travel in the next 12 months, an increase from 29% in 2022.
The policy framework allows for customisation based on specific business requirements. “As a comprehensive policy, there are generous limits in place covering all common
Flexible coverage options enable customisation
eventualities, but coverage for pre-existing medical conditions can be added following an application and acceptance,” Wallace explains.
Some pre-existing medical conditions receive automatic coverage, simplifying the application process for many business travellers. For extended travel requirements, applications for coverage extensions must be submitted prior to original policy expiry.
Higher baggage limits and valuable item coverage can be added for additional premiums, enabling brokers to adjust coverage for clients carrying expensive business equipment. This flexibility proves particularly valuable for consultants, sales representatives and technical specialists who travel with specialised equipment.
The support infrastructure represents a significant component of the policy value proposition. Allianz Partners operates a 24/7 emergency medical and travel assistance service that coordinates hospital care and arranges repatriation.
The policy structure accommodates various business travel models, from frequent individual travellers to occasional business trips by staff who primarily work domestically. This flexibility requires brokers to assess client needs carefully and recommend appropriate coverage levels.
“Brokers should reassure clients that this service exists to remove the complexity and stress of emergencies abroad,” says Wallace.
Broker education supports effective sales
Understanding technical coverage details enables brokers to provide accurate advice and appropriate policy recommendations. The distinction between business and personal travel insurance requires careful explanation, particularly regarding coverage limits and exclusions.
Wallace emphasises that broker education should focus on practical scenarios rather than theoretical coverage descriptions. Business clients typically require concrete examples of how coverage applies to their specific travel patterns and risk exposures.
