Sarah-Jane (SJ) Wild is head of partnerships at Tower Insurance. With 25 years of industry experience, she has held a diverse number of roles that have provided her with a broad and deep understanding of insurance, across New Zealand and the Pacific.
“I started out as an insurance consultant,” she says. “However, I have managed call centres, been the head of claims, and had roles in the Pacific as Fiji general manager and head of pacific operations. My most recent roles have been in sales and distribution.
“This variety has enabled a deeper understanding of all the intricacies and connections within insurance. It has also helped me to be an empathetic leader and to have a unique understanding of the impact the insurance process has on customers, particularly at claims time."
As head of partnerships, SJ has been responsible for the on-boarding of several new partnerships that have increased Tower Insurance’s visibility in the market, with creative solutions to better help New Zealanders access insurance.
“I have helped to reshape how partnerships work at Tower, moving away from traditional ideas of partnership in the insurance industry, to partnerships that add value, create healthy competition and build resilience,” she says.
SJ is a firm and passionate believer in the financial resilience that insurance provides. Having been part of the Tower team that led the response to the 2011 Canterbury Earthquakes and Cyclone Winston in Fiji in 2016, she understands the role that insurance plays to reduce the impact of major risk events on the wider economy. Both events encapsulate why she chose a career in insurance.
“Whilst insurance does not take away the trauma, it does remove the financial stress,” she says. “These experiences have left a long-standing impression on me and inspired my desire to simplify insurance, and make it more accessible and affordable.”
Due to low insurance penetration in Fiji, the destruction of 50,000 homes during Cyclone Winston had a devasting effect throughout the country. As part of Fiji’s recovery, SJ began working with the government to build more resilient homes on the islands and improve access to insurance. In recognition of her genuine desire and drive to make a difference, she was appointed deputy chair of the then newly established Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji, an initiative of the Fijian government that compensates victims of accidents, without the burden of proving fault.
SJ is a strong advocate for diversity. Prior to taking up the head of partnerships mantle, she was head of sales and distribution at Tower from 2019 to 2020. Prior to that, she was Tower’s head of Pacific operations from 2018 to 2019, and general manager of Fiji from 2015 to 2018, making her the first ever female general manager of an insurance company in Fiji.
SJ was also the first female chair of the Insurance Council of Fiji. Additionally, during this time, she was vice president of the Women in Business Fiji chapter, an organisation that actively promotes the commercial participation of women in all spheres of the economy.
At present, alongside her head of partnerships role, she is chair of the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC), a regionally focused captive insurance company, owned by Pacific Island nations. PCRIC supports disaster risk management and provides risk-pooling mechanisms for the Pacific Islands to strengthen regional resilience.
