Maxine Goddard, senior vice president, international insurance strategic distribution and development at Sompo International, is an award-winning insurance sales operations leader who has successfully spearheaded a wide range of globally strategic initiatives from large-scale business transformation to customer and broker development.
Commercially driven and obsessed with strong execution, she is focused on innovative thinking, the customer experience, and creating a winning sales culture. She has over 20 years of international management expertise across insurance, banking, oil and gas, and also with the United Nations. She is particularly passionate about developing and retaining talent – both mature and early career – and seeks to challenge thinking and behaviour regarding multiculturalism and gender balance throughout the insurance industry.
Prior to joining Sompo International, Goddard was the global head of sales operations and planning at Zurich Insurance, where she led the delivery of various strategic initiatives. She also chaired the Zurich Cultural Awareness Network and was integral in leading the multicultural D&I strategy, including the publication of their UK ethnicity pay gap report in 2020.
“After spending 14 years working with one organisation, I joined Sompo International,” says Goddard. “I’m always the first to say change is a good thing and I knew I had to take my own advice. Do I miss my old connections and supporters – yes, absolutely. Have I made it my priority to build new bonds and allyship with my new colleagues – yes, absolutely – and quickly. While I have only been at Sompo International for nine months, it already feels like I’ve been part of the family for many years. The moral of that story: growth comes from shaking up your comfort zone and by stretching yourself.”
Maxine is a dedicated mentor and an advocate for D&I across the insurance community. She is a member of the executive committee of iCAN, the insurance industry’s multicultural network and co-chairs the advisory board of the Race Action Through Leadership senior executive body. She also sits on the ISC Group’s advisory board, the Membership Committee of the Worshipful Company of Insurers and chaired and facilitated the Association of British Insurers Annual Diversity Summit in 2021.
“I am a mentor to 18 mentees of all ages, gender, race, backgrounds and experience,” she says. “To be able to connect and support others is one of the best parts of the job. I absolutely love listening and sharing my 20 years of experience in this industry and I only wish that more senior leaders would do the same. It’s of exponential value to both the individuals and the wider industry, and personally, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.”
Maxine has been recognised for her many contributions to D&I across the industry, including being selected in 2019 as the Race Equality Champion for the Insurance Age D&I Awards and named as an insurance industry Global 100 Person of Influence by Insurance Business. In 2020, she was selected as a Role Model of the Year and Highly Commended Insurance Woman of the Year at the Women in Insurance Awards. In 2020 and 2021, she was named a Yahoo! Finance EMpower Top 100 Ethnic Minority Role Model, a finalist in the 2020 Made a Difference 33 awards (MAD33), and a judge for the awards in 2021.
