Melissa Collett is the executive director of professional standards at the Chartered Insurance Institute, leading its professional standards, ethics and conduct activities for the insurance and financial planning professions. She is also responsible for the professional body’s legal affairs, risk management, disciplinary matters and corporate governance, and policy and public affairs. She is keen to raise awareness of best practices and drive ethical behaviour through engagement with the profession and external stakeholders.
Most recently, Collett chaired the Chartered Transparency Forum, which developed guidance on how insurers can close the expectation gap between insurers and customers. The guidance was endorsed by ABI and BIBA.
Collett has an extensive background in consumer and legal issues. She spent over a decade at the Financial Ombudsman Service, was a director at Fairer Finance and sat as a tribunal judge at HM Courts & Tribunals Service. She is also a qualified solicitor, specialising in insurance law at Hogan Lovells. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and events, sits on judging panels, and is the author of numerous articles and publications on consumer law subjects.
In 2021, Collet was a finalist in the Insurance Woman of the Year category at the Women in Insurance Awards. In 2022, she co-authored Female Determination, a collection of portraits and interviews with inspiring women.
