How XS Brokers mixes concierge-level service with all the market power of an industry titan

There are moments in the lifespan of a company when growth stops being a mere headline and transformation becomes the story. For XS Brokers, that moment defined 2025. More than four decades after XS Brokers’ founding, the family-run firm reached the Top 10 National P&C Wholesaler rankings – with leadership viewing this as not just an affirmation of all the hard work their team has done but also as a building block for future growth.
“Over the last five years, we’ve more than doubled our revenue, 100 percent organically, without a single acquisition,” said Sean McVicker, president at XS Brokers. “But that doubling isn’t the finish line; it’s our base camp.
We are a wholesale brokerage and binding authority intermediary specializing in highly effective solutions for retail agents and brokers. Our reach is nationwide. Drawing on over 47 years of proven experience, we make it easy to address even the most complex needs. From basic requests to the toughest client challenges, our approach is simple – we collaborate with our retail clients to source and obtain the best solutions. We are national in reach, privately held, and family-owned and -operated.

XS Brokers
Every strategic move we made over the past year was
designed to build the foundation on which our next chapter of growth will stand.”
That framing matters. At XS Brokers, leadership doesn’t see growth as something to be harvested but, rather, as something that must be engineered responsibly. McVicker honestly relays that the specific playbook that carried the firm through its last chapter cannot simply be rerun in 2026.
“The strategies that drove our success over the last five years will not get the job done in the next five, yet the most mission-critical assets – our people, carriers, and expertise – absolutely will.” The transformation of 2025 was not about abandoning what made XS Brokers successful; it centered on amplifying those assets by surrounding them with a market-leading operating platform that allows elite talent to perform at a higher level.
And that investment has been years in the making “Over the past five years, we’ve invested heavily to make XS Brokers a destination for the industry’s most elite talent – anchored by our RMI training and development program, which is producing the next generation of wholesale specialists,” said McVicker. “At the same time, we’ve transformed our IT department to elevate both our internal operating platform and the client-facing portal experience. These aren’t separate initiatives – they reinforce each other.”
The result is a firm that retailers increasingly rely on for both access and execution – a boutique operation that has all the power and sway of the biggest players in the market.
“Simply put, our clients rely on us in a more expansive way than ever before – and the firms that elevate their performance culture and delivery model will earn the trust and confidence of retailers,” added McVicker.
Family-run firm with the power of market giants One of the cornerstones of XS Brokers’ overwhelming success is simple yet effective – family ownership. As McVicker told IBA, from a structural standpoint their total independence influences everything from strategy to culture to accountability, allowing his team to be singularly focused on what they do best – serving clients.
“From a strategic standpoint, our lack of public or institutional capital – far from making us complacent – positions us to consistently balance both short-term and long-term priorities, always with the direct impact to our clients at the heart of every strategic decision. And, from a cultural standpoint, our family ownership makes us ultimately
accountable to ourselves, our colleagues, our clients, and our carrier partners. That creates an unconflicted culture of camaraderie amongst the stakeholders that matter most, a culture of seeking to deliver for each other every day, on every deal, in pursuit of partnerships that can be counted on.”
Independence is structural, not symbolic That distinction really becomes clearer than ever when compared with larger players in the market. Speaking to IBA, Misty Quail, executive vice president, national sales leader at XS Brokers, highlighted that “independence” with them goes beyond a marketing term and is essential.
“At XS Brokers, independence is structural, not symbolic. We’re privately held and family owned, with no private equity sponsors, public shareholders, or outside capital influencing our strategy. Equally important, we don’t have a retail arm. Unlike many large wholesalers operating within vertically integrated organizations, XS Brokers eliminates any real or perceived conflicts around account ownership, data, or market access.
“Our only client is the retail agent, and our incentives are fully aligned with theirs. Our governance model keeps decision-making close to the business, enabling agility, consistent underwriting standards, and strong carrier partnerships – without centralized mandates or competing interests.”
‘We prioritize understanding each carrier’s unique appetite’Nowhere is that focus more evident than in the brokerage property division – an industry-leading arm of XS Brokers – where specialization is treated as a prerequisite rather than a luxury. Brendan Nohelty, senior vice president, division leader brokerage property at XS Brokers, explained that the structure here is intentionally designed to improve outcomes for both agents and underwriters.
“The brokerage property team is organized into specialized groups, each dedicated to working in the large shared/layered risk space,” said Nohelty. “Each team consists of a lead broker, along with placement specialists who focus exclusively on new business under the direction of the lead broker. Account executives are tasked with managing the renewal book. This structure is designed to optimize both our service and expertise, benefiting both retail agents and carrier partners.”
Specialization also drives better market behavior. By dedicating teams specifically to the brokerage property sector, XS Brokers ensures that they consistently meet the high service expectations of their agents while maintaining a “best-in-class” approach for their underwriting partners. Carrier relationships are always treated as strategic assets.
“We prioritize understanding each carrier’s unique appetite and focus on building strong relationships with underwriters,” added Nohelty. “This approach allows us to present the right business to the right carriers, ensuring a streamlined process and maximizing our hit ratios.”
As carrier appointments have shifted from firm-level to broker- or team-level access, XS Brokers has adapted without sacrificing scale. As Nohelty explained, his team has successfully adapted to the shift in carrier appointments, where carriers now tend to appoint individual offices or teams instead of entire wholesale shops. And, while national size still matters, independence here really amplifies it.
“XS Brokers has leveraged its national size and scale to deliver significant volume, but it’s our independence that allows us to remain nimble and responsive to market changes. Our commitment to this model has enabled us to build strong, trusted relationships with our carriers.
“In an environment where carriers are often short-staffed and underwriters face an overwhelming volume of submissions, XS Brokers has proven its dedication to being a true partner. This commitment has resulted in full appointments across the country for all our brokers, allowing us to access a broad panel of markets and continue delivering exceptional service to our clients.”
XS Brokers’ stable of carrier partners is a driving force behind their consistent growth. As Annie Dawson, EVP carrier relations & corporate strategy, told IBA, these relationships are the foundation that allows their firm to expand the right way.
“We’ve been very intentional about building a deep, diversified panel of partners that know how we operate and are aligned with us for the long term, which ultimately leads to better, more creative solutions for our retail clients,” added Dawson. “When you pair those relationships with the investments we’re making in technology, it gives our team the ability to move faster, handle increased flow with consistency, and deliver the same high-touch experience in every region we serve. That combination lets us expand our reach and capabilities without losing the boutique, relationship-driven culture that’s always defined us, and it’s what positions us to scale in a way that’s both meaningful and sustainable.”
Despite its scale, XS Brokers remains intentional about preserving a boutique feel – something that’s a real cornerstone of their value system. Nohelty described the day-to-day experience as a concierge model, not just transactional.
“As a Top 10 National Wholesaler, XS Brokers offers comprehensive capabilities across all product lines, backed by exceptional market access. At the same time, we maintain the personalized feel of an independently owned wholesaler, ensuring that our retail partners can rely on us to deliver the products and carriers they need, with the responsiveness and attention they expect. Retail partners can always reach out and speak directly with someone, rather than feeling like just another number in a large organization. And, by staying committed to doing the little things right, we can act quickly, make decisions faster, and provide seamless support.”
Investing faster, investing smarterUnderpinning this inherently human-led approach is technology, a true partnership of concierge support leveraged by innovative tools and platforms. That unique mix means that XS Brokers boasts best-in-class, top-of-the-range tech while also offering all the human-to-human, concierge-level support that clients expect.
“Proportionate to our headcount, we’re investing more in technology than firms many times our size – and 2026 is the year where deliverables come online for both our staff and our clients,” added McVicker. “We have all the market access, carrier relationships, and expertise of the largest wholesalers in the country, but with the speed and agility that only an independent, privately held firm can deliver. That combination is our competitive edge.”
That philosophy extends directly to their people and their hiring strategy, most notably seen in the onboarding of two highly regarded industry icons – Andy Jamieson as chief technology officer and Jason Brudnick as chief information officer. And XS Brokers has no intention of stopping there.
“The investments we’ve made in technology and talent are all focused on making our client experience as comprehensive and positive as possible,” added Eric Wirkus, CEO at XS Brokers. “Specific to the area of IT, we believe they should be as much considered a growth engine of our business as they are a utility function. Relationships on all sides benefit from a modern technology platform. Our carrier partners understand our book on a much deeper level, our clients in turn have their business placed efficiently, and we’re able to attract top talent that wants to spend more time building relationships than handling administrative tasks. It’s a virtuous cycle we plan to continue.”
Harnessing data and powerful analytics But, despite its family-run aesthetic and boutique size, XS Brokers is a behemoth where data and analytics are concerned. As Nohelty told IBA, these new tools are shaping product development and broker support in real time, including an exclusive SME property product rolling out soon.
He said they’re excited to leverage the volume, data, and carrier relationships to continue to innovate and deliver proprietary solutions to better support their retail clients. For retail agents deciding where to place challenging property risks, Quail added that the difference is immediate.
“It gives both speed and access. As a privately held, family-
owned firm, XS Brokers provides direct access to senior underwriters, brokers, and decision-makers with superior market relationships. And with no retail arm and no outside capital influencing priorities, our team is fully aligned with the retail agent.”
Servant-leadership model: best-in-class service Looking toward 2030, McVicker resists defining success solely by premium volume, instead saying he’s focused on building a culture where that success comes organically.
“I’m not worried about the outcome first. I’m focused on architecting an environment where success becomes inevitable. Talent is the heartbeat of our business, and everything we build is designed to help that talent perform at the highest level.”
That culture, one built entirely around its people, is a core building block of XS Brokers’ exponential growth.
“People are genuinely drawn to XS Brokers’ culture,” added McVicker. “We’re among the few remaining truly independent, privately held wholesalers of our scale, and the people who join us are mission-oriented – they’re here because they know they’re not just another cog in the wheel. Every decision we make is geared towards delivering an elevated client experience, and the camaraderie and energy across our offices is a point of pride. While offering a fully flexible remote model, it’s validating to see teams and offices coming together to learn and hustle alongside one another. That tells you something about the environment we’ve built.”
This in-office desire has led to yet more expansion for XS Brokers, with teams moving to a larger space in Charlotte and even opening new offices in Charleston, Pensacola, and Philadelphia, adding to the existing footprint.
And how does the team remain connected and aligned across all these locations?
“At XS Brokers, alignment and accessibility start at the leadership level,” said Quail. We are intentional about maintaining open lines of communication and fostering genuine connectivity across our organization – whether team members are in-office or fully remote. Transparency isn’t a talking point for us; it’s an operating principle that keeps our people closely tied to our mission and to one another.
“As our president says often, our leadership philosophy must be rooted in servant leadership. We view our role as removing obstacles, creating clarity, and equipping our teams with the resources they need to perform at the highest level. When our producers and marketers are empowered to operate without friction, they’re able to deliver best-in-class outcomes for both our retail partners and our carrier relationships.”
