Arch Capital Group Ltd. is a publicly listed Bermuda-exempted company that writes insurance, reinsurance and mortgage insurance on a worldwide basis.
Since Arch was formed in 2001, they have grown in many ways: geographically, through new lines of business, such as programs, and by increasing the size of their workforce.
Arch has long been known for being a very forward-looking company, seeking to “zig when others zag.” That has been evident during this market cycle, as Arch has invested more in programs while others have reduced capacity or exited the business. Arch’s investments include new products, increased use of data analytics, and improved system capabilities – all meant to make Arch more valuable to its partners and help them grow their program business.
“Having been in the programs business for over 20 years, we know that honoring exclusivity is table stakes to program administrators,” says Paul Sullivan, EVP, P&C programs at Arch Insurance. “It’s not something you can do most of the time. You have to earn the trust of your partner over time by listening and honoring your commitment.”

Their program managers are experienced property and casualty experts. All of their program managers have at least 20 years of experience, and a decade or more handling program relationships. They take pride in trying to always find ways to make a program more profitable, or to find areas where Arch’s competitive advantages enable growth.
“We hear regularly from program administrators that other carriers are only able to work with them on straight property & casualty lines,” says Sullivan “When it moves into cyber, professional and management liability, or A&H as examples, other carriers fall down. We see that as a strength of Arch and make a conscious effort to be sure we make growing in those areas with Arch easy.”
Arch writes over a billion dollars in annual premium with program administrators, over $600 million of that in the P&C programs space. Of that, over two-thirds of their business is with partners that have been with Arch for more than 10 years.
“When we partner with someone, we intend to do it for the long haul,” says Sullivan. “And then we honor our commitments.”
