Specialty Comp Insurance Solutions (SCIS) is a leading program administrator specializing in writing middle-market, monoline workers’ compensation insurance. The company’s roots date back approximately 15 years, when it was launched as a division of MarketScout, an insurance distribution and underwriting company headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
The workers’ comp unit, led by Jay Chase, grew from $0 to more than $100 million of premium, and was subsequently sold to Specialty Program Group LLC (SPG) in June 2017. Under SPG, the new company rebranded as Specialty Comp Insurance Solutions. SCIS brought on industry leader Steve Math, FCAS, CPCU in January 2019. Math currently serves as SCIS’s president and CEO, having taken over the reins from Chase in 2022. Math and the outstanding underwriting team – led by Chase, Mike Beck, Matt Feury, and Barbara Drollinger – have helped the company double its volume to almost $200 million written premium in 2022, with outstanding underwriting results, materially better than industry averages.
“Employing some of the best workers’ comp underwriters in the industry, SCIS is able to utilize a craftsman underwriting approach to effectively underwrite and price extremely complex accounts,” says Math, president and CEO of SCIS. “Additionally, the SCIS advisory services model is embraced by carriers, brokers and policyholders, resulting in high customer loyalty and improved underwriting outcomes.”
Representing world class “A” rated insurers, SCIS operates as both an MGA and wholesale distributor. The SCIS team of highly experienced workers’ comp professionals has access to carriers with a broad risk appetite. Underwriters can access markets across most states, classes, and experience mods. Historically, SCIS has carved out a market niche in challenged placements such as tough classes, multi-state risks, high e-mods and recent losses. However, SCIS has broadened its platform to handle workers’ comp risks across the spectrum – challenged placements and standard market accounts, large and small. Writing across all major industry sectors, SCIS has been extremely successful in the specialty sectors of construction, healthcare, and hospitality. SCIS is also able to write single-industry staffing accounts.
SCIS has developed a highly effective advisory services model, led by Kirt Thompson, employing licensed claim adjustors and other specialists to provide an additional level of oversight on claims, loss control, premium audit/classification, and other functions. These value-added services are provided at no cost to carriers and policyholders, and have proven to be extremely effective in increasing customer satisfaction, loyalty, and policy retention. Further, the SCIS Advisory Services model has delivered proven positive results, driving down loss costs and ultimately improving e-mods, and lowering premiums. In a recent study, SCIS found that overall risk results improved by an average of 14.8% for all accounts serviced, with the most dramatic improvements observed for clients with mods of 1.20 and above.
“[In the near future,] SCIS seeks to build on its historically outstanding success by promoting the company’s name and capabilities more prominently,” says Math. “SCIS seeks to selectively grow its producer base and carrier partnerships in an effort to serve most market niches.”
