Joel Hirschfeld was born into a financially shrewd family in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a distinguished accountant who encouraged him to get into insurance to take advantage of the demand for property, casualty, and construction coverage. After graduating from Brooklyn College, he did.
Hirschfeld is now the principal broker and founder of Hirschfeld & Associates. The Brooklyn-based agency is made up of independent agents and, since 2010, has partnered with over 150 independent carriers. Hirschfield is licensed in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Connecticut, Arizona, Virginia, Iowa, and Pennsylvania.
In recent years, the company has been growing rapidly. Hirschfeld currently has 10 employees but is looking for five more, and it’s not uncommon for him and his team to work 15-hour days. Why the demand?
“I listen to every insurance customer,” he says. “With a $1 policy or a $100-million policy, you focus on the policy and the needs of the insured and make sure you meet his needs.
“The key to growth is top customer services and coverages. Better coverage talks more than decreased premiums. When coverage is good, then the premium decreases.”
Hirschfield grew revenue from $15 million in 2020 to $21 million in 2021 to 85 million in 2022; for year of 2023 to close of total premium of $110 million. Boosted the number of clients from 9,000 in 2020 to 10,000 in 2021; and increased the number of policies written from 13,000 in 2020 to 15,000 in 2021.
What’s in store for the near future? Supporting his company’s fast growth rate. “We’ll be hiring more secretaries and educating them and training them,” says Hirschfeld. “And we’ll be hiring more managers. All in all, we’re determined to make sure our customers get what they need.”
“We will continue to strengthen our service proposition and customer experience as a key differentiator, as we build on the momentum we have achieved to date across multiple business lines and territories”
