“I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes”
Ken Dixon,
Dixon Insurance Services
Carrie Barr is the president of Casualty Solutions at Verisk, where she helps the organization drive greater efficiencies for clients through workflow automation, programmatic compliance, and decision-support solutions. She previously was the senior vice president of claims sales, helping lead client engagement and develop the sales team.
According to her, things are changing regarding women in the insurance industry.
“The insurance industry has become more favorable for women in recent years, both for those new to the industry as well as more seasoned professionals,” she says. “There are numerous ways to enter the insurance industry, whether it’s through sales, technology, legal, financial, data science or actuarial, to name a few. In many cases, roles are remote or flexible, which can particularly benefit mothers. The industry is also experiencing a significant workforce shift, with many experienced professionals nearing retirement. In fact, studies show there will be 25,000 job openings annually in the claims function alone over the next decade. This shift provides potential leadership opportunities for women in the industry.”
Qualities that define her work include being unrelenting about the customer experience, being collaborative yet decisive in leadership, and having a true passion for coaching and growing people. Furthermore, she has a strong background in sales and a great ability to help clients solve challenging problems.
“I spent most of my career in sales before pivoting into operations,” she says. “It was unfamiliar territory for me after being in a client-facing role for so long. But I was able to leverage my sales background and passion for clients in the new position. I routinely held customer-specific stewardship and focus meetings aimed at deeply understanding client needs so we could continue to provide innovative and superior solutions for the industry.”
Over the years, she’s helped clients:
- save nearly $250 million in Medicare liens over a two-year period
- save over $2.2 million in Treasury Department disputes
- improve the application of comparative liability by up to 20%
- reduce medical records review time by up to 90%
“Much of my success can be attributed to the tremendous amount of support I’ve received,” she says. “When my son was born, my mother retired and came on the road with me so I didn’t have to miss time with my child while traveling for business. For the first two years of my son’s life, the three of us traveled together to 18 states. I am forever grateful for that time, being able to meet the demands of my work responsibilities without sacrificing quality time with my son. I know how lucky I am to have that form of work-life balance, and not everyone has that support. Support systems are critical for working mothers.”

How does he distinguish himself among fellow brokers?
“I believe all brokers are working very hard in a difficult market,” he says. “However, I have demonstrated continued growth, advocacy and performance on my client’s behalf, which is now recognised [for 10 consecutive years] in the Elite Broker awards.”
In 1990, Dixon got started with FAI, working in claims and as a team leader. From the late 1990s up until 2003, he worked at FAI and Suncorp in underwriting and as an area manager at VACC, CGU (South East Queensland). From 2003 to 2012, he got into broking and eventually started Dixon Insurance in 2013. Since then, he’s accumulated numerous acccolades, including Elite Broker, Diversity and Equity, and Fast Broker awards.
During the pandemic, Dixon challenged insurers over the Quarantine Act application to insurance wordings. His argument was that the Quarantine Act does not apply as an exclusion, as the Biosecurity Act was invoked by the Morrison Government, and this was not a subsequent amendment to the Quarantine Act. The test case in the Appeals court was won for Dixon’s client with a unanimous five-judge verdict.
He remains focused on transport, manufacturing, motor trade, engineering and large farm clients.
What are his plans for the future?
On a business level, “more of the same. I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes.”
On a personal level, Dixon invests significant time, effort and funds, along with his GT3, to support many charities through his passion for motorsport. From participating in and sponsoring the Thunderbolt Run (which provides tens of thousands of dollars in support for Beyond Blue and Prostate Cancer), to organising and running the Track Knights for Amira charity night where 28 Exotic Supercars raised funds through passenger laps in wet conditions, Dixon states “this is our time to give back to the community and those in need. My friendships and association with those seeking to do the same, allows us to contribute to those less fortunate and raise funds and awareness”.
He adds: “To be able to give back to the community is rewarding and fulfilling. I am honoured to be in a position where I can raise funds for those less fortunate and in need.”
