“My favorite saying is, ‘Faith it ‘til you make it. Don’t fake it; believe in yourself and give yourself enough grace to learn along the way.’ That one-word change has removed a lot of imposter syndrome for me”

“Learning to lead a team and build relationships across continents is a challenge, but also an incredibly rewarding opportunity.”
As senior vice president, AFM division manager, Laurel Rudnick is responsible for FM Global’s middle-market insurance division.
“Our value proposition is to help our clients prevent loss by bringing a unique engineering perspective to their properties and operations. We help them assess, quantify, and mitigate their risk.”
Joining FM Global as a consultant engineer in 2006, Rudnick graduated from California State University, Northridge, with a master’s degree in engineering management, and the University of California, Davis, with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.
“I envisioned a long career within engineering, but ultimately, my career followed a very different path. I found my calling in leadership and adding value from the business side. The lesson I learned was to keep an open mind to opportunities.”
Prior to her current role, Rudnick held a variety of positions at FM Global, including account manager, group manager account engineering, and assistant client service manager. With years of experience in varied positions, Rudnick’s sharp professional edge is a testament to her ability to take on new challenges.
“I am willing to put myself in new situations and to be uncomfortable knowing I will learn and grow the most from those experiences. Starting in insurance in an engineering role and pursing risk improvement before risk transfer provided me with unique perspectives and experiences.”
Highlighting the importance of mentorship, Rudnick never hesitates to help others. “I am proud when I see individuals I’ve hired thrive and grow their careers. I am passionate about being a mentor and leader who builds others up.”
In addition to mentoring young talent at FM Global, Rudnick seeks to promote insurance and risk management as an industry where professionals can build dynamic, innovative, and fulfilling careers.
“With more visibility on the impact and purpose behind what we do, we will attract more diverse talent with a wider breadth of experience.”
For Rudnick, setting a positive example as a female leader is critical, and extends beyond the office. “I also want to be a good mom and role model for my two daughters. I want them to see how important it is to find a career you are passionate about and believe in.”

As a product manager, Rios knows that success is all about prioritizing and making trade-offs. The VP continually strives to find a balance between upskilling her team and herself.
“The more capable my team is, the more they can take on and allow me to tackle difficult problems, of course, but there is always a balance between the longer-term training and needing to get some work done in the short term.”
While Rios admits she doesn’t always get it right, the VP takes every experience as an opportunity to grow and learn. “I find a lot of value and enjoyment in trying something new, and excitement in not knowing what problem needs solving on a given day.”

As an elite leader in insurance, Rios hopes to use her influence to inspire young women to be bold.
“As I have moved into more leadership roles, I think it’s imperative to support others in taking risks,” she says. “My favorite saying is, ‘Faith it ‘til you make it. Don’t fake it; believe in yourself and give yourself enough grace to learn along the way.’ That one-word change has removed a lot of imposter syndrome for me.”
Hoping to see more females enter the insurance sector, Rios says the soft skills that are often attributed to feminine energy are precisely what the industry needs.
“Insurance is about people and restoring lives after a traumatic event. We need that human connection to help others rebuild. Those skills are positive and infectious energy.”
