Karen McCarthy-Hawn is a claim advocacy manager of signature programs at Risk Placement Services (RPS). In addition, she is also a business analyst for the RPS analytics platform, which involves continually balancing the varying needs of all stakeholders.
McCarthy-Hawn is tasked with ensuring that the focus for all business decisions remains on enhanced claim outcomes and overall program performance.
She says, “My strongest professional quality is my desire and ability to learn new things and take on roles or challenges that help support RPS needs, especially as the organization’s needs evolve.”
She attributes her career success to being adaptable and able to work with others.
“I firmly believe that most of the obstacles at work can be overcome with collaboration and a willingness to implement the change needed to remove the barriers to success,” she says.
Her dual roles have afforded McCarthy-Hawn the space to showcase her range of attributes.
“I get to use my attention to detail and problem-solving skills to improve efficiencies for all of our program partners. This includes our carrier partners, TPAs, the PEO or staffing broker teams, their insured clients, and our internal teams,” she explains. “When I present any obstacles discovered in the claims or systems work product, I always expect to be an active participant in helping find solutions or to provide training to change future outcomes.”
While there have been challenges to navigating the insurance industry as a woman, McCarthy-Hawn has carved out a reputation by developing a broad skillset.
“My diverse amount of multi-state and federal workers’ compensation industry knowledge has helped me immensely.” she says. “In my roles, I have been exposed to state and federal insurance exposures and understand the stakeholder needs from an insured, broker, and carrier/TPA perspective. I care about lifting others up and not wasting all the knowledge I have been fortunate to learn by keeping it to myself, and my industry peers know that and often come to me for help.”
Success comes in different forms and McCarthy-Hawn focuses on integrity. She favours the correct ways of operating over personal gain.
“I would like to be known as someone who always cared deeply about the industry, the organization I worked for, and my industry peers. I want my work product to speak for itself. I also would like to be known as someone who always followed my ethical or moral compass and did the hard thing when it was called for instead of sitting in silence for self-gain.”
