Profile
Abbie Taylor is executive vice president and chief operating officer at Fortegra.
Her career has been defined less by a rigid plan and more by a deliberate focus on continually expanding her skillset and seizing meaningful opportunities. Early experience in consulting gave her a rigorous grounding in analytic, cross-industry problem-solving.
From there, she deliberately built breadth across finance, product, customer experience, marketing, and technology. That broad-based expertise is now central to her effectiveness as a COO: she understands the business from every angle and can connect strategy to execution across functions and geographies.
She says, “The biggest challenge as a leader is ensuring that my time and my team’s time are prioritized to drive the most value for the organization. I constantly evaluate our organizational strategy and focus on building the infrastructure to support our future vision – prioritizing talent, technology, and capital resources.”
Taylor is also pivotal to Fortegra in building a global specialty insurer across the US, UK, Europe, and beyond. She has led transformative initiatives such as establishing Fortegra’s global shared services model, scaling operations, and implementing advanced technology platforms and processes that can grow while remaining responsive to market needs.
“This type of work energizes me because, like many of us at Fortegra, I’m a business builder at heart,” she says. “Earlier in my career, I contributed to joint venture growth strategies and helped establish customer experience organizations from the ground up, experiences that taught me how to build with both immediate impact and long-term sustainability in mind.”

As a founding member of WOW! (Women. Opportunity. Winning.), an employee resource group created for all women of Ryan Specialty, Phillips Topping has long championed for women in the industry.
“It’s very important to set an example and to not only inspire but mentor other females,” she adds.
In addition to her sharp marketing eye, the key to Phillips Topping’s success lies in her high-energy approach and positive attitude.
“As the leader of a team, it’s important to motivate and encourage your team members. People work very hard and do their best and it’s important to recognize these efforts. For my career overall, my attitude has been one of curiosity. The more you can learn, the better you’ll understand the business, and then the deeper your knowledge will become, making you a better team member.”

She continually assesses strategy, aligning talent, technology, and capital with Fortegra’s future vision. By helping people understand the value of their work, Taylor drives engagement and fosters a culture where everyone sees themselves as a builder of the company’s future.
With respect to her impact at Fortegra, she adds, “I enjoy taking on operational challenges that enable our underwriting, actuarial, and finance professionals to focus on their core priorities, ultimately delivering meaningful value to Fortegra's partners and stakeholders.”
Three themes anchor her approach to both role and career:
commitment to continuous learning
focus on serving the enterprise and adding tangible value
alignment with companies whose values mirror her own
Recognized by Insurance Business as an Elite Woman 2026, Taylor is aware of the importance of visibility and representation. In a sector where senior female role models remain limited, she has chosen to see barriers as an invitation to chart her own course.
Through mentorship, active participation in networks of women C-suite leaders, and initiatives like Fortegra’s Network of Women (N.O.W.) program, she is helping build clearer pathways, stronger support systems, and broader possibilities for the next generation.
“If my experience can help someone navigate their path with more confidence or clarity, then recognition like this becomes much more meaningful,” she says. “My goal is to help create a cycle where every generation of leaders lifts the next one higher.”
