“One day I came up for air and found that the team was well versed in their respective roles, and I realized that we all survived, and we made it to the other side without a single misstep”

Dan Trueman serves as the global head of cyber and technology at AXIS. Trueman is an experienced multi-class underwriter with expertise in cyber, reputational risk, intellectual property, supply chain insurance, political risks, contract frustration, marine consequential loss, marine war, marine hull, piracy, physical damage and energy. Prior to AXIS, he served as the chief innovation officer and unit head for the cyber division of Novae since 2014. He was previously at ANV, where he was lead underwriter for its enterprise risk division. Prior to this, he spent 10 years at Kiln Syndicates, most recently as active underwriter of the enterprise risk division of Syndicate 510.
“I was fortunate that my first role on the graduate scheme at Kiln emphasised studying hard for insurance qualifications,” says Trueman. “This gave me the chance to delve deeply into the theory behind insurance whilst rotating through business units that were involved in the practical application of that theory. This gave me insight into what I wanted to do. For me, that quickly became a passion with the more innovative sides of insurance, especially intangible risks. Many of these products are still new, but I feel fortunate enough to have been obsessed with them for over 20 years.”
Trueman says being a part of what he considers the best team in the market is the single biggest achievement of his career. He enjoys working alongside his team to recruit, retain, and train an incredibly dedicated, insightful, passionate, and determined group of underwriters and cyber experts.
He remains a strong professional by continually listening to a diverse range of opinions and not being afraid to make a decision. He understands how important a team is and focuses on developing healthy functioning team dynamics.
“There are aways unlimited wants and limited resources. I believe true high performance is doing the best you can with what you have in front of you and that is made even better by sharing that effort with brilliant people around you,” says Trueman. “I often think we focus too much on the challenges and not enough on the opportunities.”

“I took over my current role in the height of the pandemic, when the cyber insurance market was experiencing the biggest disruption in the history of cyber,” says Wilson. “Our top talent in the cyber marketing space left to further their careers and I had to step in and pick up the pieces and ensure that our clients’ interests were properly protected while providing exceptional service while simultaneously hiring, training, and managing an entirely new staff. There was an eight-month period where I was working 15-to-18-hour days consistently. It was exhausting and brutal, but then one day I came up for air and found that the team was well versed in their respective roles, and I realized that we all survived, and we made it to the other side without a single misstep.”
Wilson has always been an entrepreneur at heart and always paved her own path. However, she notes that the success of this team, during such a chaotic time would have to be one of the biggest achievements that she’s experienced, though it is not hers to claim.
“This has been a team effort from the word go and I don’t think that it would have been a success with any other group of individuals,” she says. “This has truly been one of the most extraordinary experiences I’ve had professionally and so much of it is due to each team member’s willingness to step outside of their comfort zone, learn a new discipline and most importantly, support one another to provide outstanding service to our clients. This brand-new team started out in complete crisis mode, some staff were leaving as others were joining, so roles were shifting as new hires were walking in the door. We bonded and supported one another through the chaos, and we grew exponentially together. We are an extraordinarily collaborative team and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together.”
Gratitude is an overarching theme in Wilson’s outlook. When you love the work that you do, and you appreciate the people around you, it’s hard not to succeed.
