“My biggest achievement has been starting Falvey Cargo Underwriting in 1995 and building that into Falvey Insurance Group with over 150 employees and operations in the US, Canada and London”
Mike Falvey,
Falvey Insurance Group
Mike Falvey traveled around a bit before setting anchor in insurance and building his own ship. After studying at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, he went to work at FM Global as a cargo underwriter. After a year, he left to go to the sea as a merchant marine; he sailed with the US Military SeaLift Command as a first assistant engineer. In turn, that led to a stint from 1983 to 1984 in London, where he served as the liaison officer for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
Then he encountered a special someone. “Once I met my wife,” he explains, “I did not want to return to the sea.” So, he went to work for Donald J. Rojas, a cargo cover note holder for Lloyd’s, in 1984.

Milestones
In 1995, he started his own business, Falvey Cargo Underwriting.
“My biggest achievement has been starting Falvey Cargo Underwriting in 1995 and building that into Falvey Insurance Group with over 150 employees and operations in the US, Canada and London,” he says.
For Falvey, maintaining integrity and staying true to his work is one of his strongest qualities. He believes that, while doing the right thing is not always the easiest or simplest way to move forward, it’s ultimately for the best.
He remains open-minded and innovative regarding his career. He has never been one to shy away from the evolving factors of the industry, especially data and technology. By embracing these changes, rather than resisting them, Falvey has been able to create, develop and innovate some of the best underwriting and risk management systems in the industry.
After all these years, he continues to maintain its upright position despite occasional stormy seas.
“The new perspective of the workplace post-pandemic has been an adjustment,” he says. “Falvey is very much an in-person, collaborative business. Readjusting after working remotely for some time and hiring at such a rapid pace, it is important to me that we all know one another and have the opportunity to connect, work together and socialize.”
