“One day I came up for air and found that the team was well versed in their respective roles, and I realized that we all survived, and we made it to the other side without a single misstep”

Vincent C. Tizzio was appointed CEO of Specialty Insurance and Reinsurance in June 2022 and he will succeed Albert A. Benchimol as group president and CEO in May 2023. He joined AXIS in January 2022 as senior advisor – insurance market strategy. Prior to joining AXIS, Tizzio served as executive vice president and head of global specialty at The Hartford, where he led a multibillion-dollar business focused on delivering a broad array of specialty products through wholesale and retail channels. Previously, he had served for seven years as president and CEO of Navigators Management Company, leading the organization until its acquisition by The Hartford in 2019. Prior to this, Tizzio worked at Zurich Financial Services and AIG, serving in progressive senior leadership roles within both companies.
“Throughout my career, I’ve tried to challenge myself by taking on roles with differing responsibilities, which has enabled me to gain new perspectives and develop as a leader,” says Tizzio. “My ambition has always been to run a global public company as a CEO but, more importantly, I believe that the diverse experiences that I’ve gained throughout my career have helped enrich my thinking and propel my growth.”
Whenever he’s faced hurdles over the years, he says the best way to navigate such challenges is to surround yourself with strong leaders who you can trust and who bring deep subject matter acumen. The job is more fun when working alongside a capable team who shares your passion for growing the business.
“My greatest accomplishments as a leader have been when I’ve been able to positively impact people's lives and help talent grow and achieve their potential,” explains Tizzio. “Additionally, I have enjoyed taking on new undertakings, seeing them flourish and realizing the ambition we have set. Having the opportunity to serve as future CEO of AXIS presents such an opportunity, and I’m looking forward to working with our team to achieve our vision of taking the business to the next level.”
Asked about the qualities that are important as a leader, Tizzio highlights empathy, a sense of self responsibility and accountability. He adds that he also tries to consistently bring a positive and optimistic mindset to his role. “People perform their best in a positive, performance-oriented environment, which is the culture we are focused on building at AXIS.”

“I took over my current role in the height of the pandemic, when the cyber insurance market was experiencing the biggest disruption in the history of cyber,” says Wilson. “Our top talent in the cyber marketing space left to further their careers and I had to step in and pick up the pieces and ensure that our clients’ interests were properly protected while providing exceptional service while simultaneously hiring, training, and managing an entirely new staff. There was an eight-month period where I was working 15-to-18-hour days consistently. It was exhausting and brutal, but then one day I came up for air and found that the team was well versed in their respective roles, and I realized that we all survived, and we made it to the other side without a single misstep.”
Wilson has always been an entrepreneur at heart and always paved her own path. However, she notes that the success of this team, during such a chaotic time would have to be one of the biggest achievements that she’s experienced, though it is not hers to claim.
“This has been a team effort from the word go and I don’t think that it would have been a success with any other group of individuals,” she says. “This has truly been one of the most extraordinary experiences I’ve had professionally and so much of it is due to each team member’s willingness to step outside of their comfort zone, learn a new discipline and most importantly, support one another to provide outstanding service to our clients. This brand-new team started out in complete crisis mode, some staff were leaving as others were joining, so roles were shifting as new hires were walking in the door. We bonded and supported one another through the chaos, and we grew exponentially together. We are an extraordinarily collaborative team and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together.”
Gratitude is an overarching theme in Wilson’s outlook. When you love the work that you do, and you appreciate the people around you, it’s hard not to succeed.
