“I am a student of the business. Over the course of my career, I’ve looked for opportunities that would allow me to learn something new: a diverse line of coverage, a new side of the business, a different market. These experiences expanded my viewpoint and business acumen, well positioning me for future roles and an exciting career path,” says Lupica.
Prior to being Division President, in 2016, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer for Westchester, where he had responsibility for operations and distribution strategy. In 2000, Lupica joined Westchester (formerly ACE Westchester Specialty Group), as executive vice president of the professional risk division.
Before joining ACE, Lupica held various roles of increasing responsibility across North America in underwriting, brokering, and reinsurance, spanning small business to global risks.
“The wholesale market is dynamic and requires you to stay current with the marketplace,” he explains. “You must adapt while maintaining consistency. This juxtaposition is one of the unique things I love about working at Westchester; being agile while offering a familiar brand and suite of products is something only a few firms do well.”
Lupica has worked diligently to ensure Westchester’s success through innovative thinking, digitization, and prioritizing the people in his business, both internal and external to his organization.
In a world that has adapted to a virtual way of doing business, Lupica chooses to continue to be present: he comes into the office, gets out onto the floor to sit with employees and better understand their day-to-day responsibilities, and remains active and visible with trading partners and the industry at large. He understands that some of the most robust conversations, learnings, and interactions most often come from being face to face, which is why he makes leading by example a priority in his business.
Lupica pushes his people toward new ways of thinking and expects them to rise to the task while also earning a reputation of being an approachable, creative, and open leader.
“My attitude has always been to lead by example while nurturing and challenging rising talent. I enjoy coaching and observing people as they develop into leaders, not only at Westchester but within the industry and their communities. I love to watch young insurance professionals transform into top executives. It’s not about my legacy; it’s the legacy of those I’ve mentored and guided into the industry. Only time will tell exactly how that story unfolds,” he says.
“I know that my achievements will be magnified not solely by my own actions but the actions of others that I’ve coached, mentored, and sponsored along the way. We’ve built a culture of innovation and productivity, a culture defined by a desire to see the next generation succeed, and that drive toward excellence is something that I know will have lasting benefits to our employees, our clients, and our partners.”
For Lupica, age and time bring insight, enabling him to rely on his vast experience to problem solve. Utilizing that insight, he believes the future is bright for Westchester, his colleagues and trading partners, and the E&S channel at large.
