“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”
Kelvin Rampersad,
Carte Wealth Management
The year 2024 marked three decades of service at the firm for Monarch E&S’s chief executive officer, Derek Borisoff, who fosters a family and team atmosphere within the company.
After graduating from USC with a business finance degree in 1983, Borisoff always knew he wanted to get into the insurance industry, following in the footsteps of his father who was a retail insurance agent.
A NAPSLO intern while attending university, Borisoff spent a year in London, UK, after graduating as a broker intern with Lloyd’s, before joining Howard James Company in 1985. He joined Monarch in 1994 and specializes in the industry’s E&S/MGA side.
“I believe this is the most interesting space to work,” says Borisoff. “We are problem solvers for our retail broker customers. We help our many retailers grow their books of business and retain their fine renewals. This has provided me the pleasure to build so many friendships with both our many retail customers and our partner carriers.”
Much more than a CEO, the California native also plays the role of a coach.
“Everything I learned participating and coaching the sport of water polo is applicable to leading and building a business. I hope my peers recognize that honesty, integrity, work ethic, and a sense of team are core values of mine and Monarch Insurance,” he explains.
“I am a very positive person in life, and I love the insurance industry. I believe this energy carries over to the people in our organization, our retail broker customers, and our carrier partners. Leading by example is important.”
His role brings challenges, whether in acquisition strategy, hiring talented people, P&L, budgeting, accounting, technology, mentoring, or putting out fires. Despite these, he tackles every problem with a refreshing attitude.
“My job is exciting – working with the best young, hardworking, and smart management team. In addition, Monarch is now part of a great organization, Specialty Program Group (SPG). This provides us with the resources, infrastructure and engaged corporate management to better meet the needs of our retail broker customers.”
Being in the industry for over 40 years, Borisoff has seen a great deal of change for the better.
“Technology has been the real game changer within our industry and trying to always stay ahead of the curve. I also believe it is important to always be open to learning from the many experts within the insurance community. Maintaining those great longtime relationships with our carrier partners has proven to be so valuable,” he says.
“I would hope I have become calmer over the years, but my wife Kristi would say that is not the case.”
Borisoff wants to leave a legacy of creating a work environment where people feel they are valued.
“Establishing a stable and reputable company that they can be proud to work. I have been fortunate to employ hundreds of great people over my entire career, something I take very seriously. I take great pride that this has helped their respective families reach their dreams.”
