"We made a point to visit and educate brokers who did not have environmental resources”
Joseph Boren,
Synapse Services
Joseph Boren has more than 50 years of insurance industry experience, primarily in the environmental industry, and has held numerous leadership and management positions. As an executive in the waste management business, he handled insurance obligations and surety bond placements. He also worked for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and the Connecticut Resource Recovery Authority.
“Since I had spent so many years in the environmental business working for not just industrial facilities but also law firms, private equity firms and more, I had a great sense of who would be interested in environmental insurance products,” says Boren. “I referred to that group as ‘influencers.’ Once they understood that insurance was available and the protection it offered, they could instruct their respective brokers to buy it. We also made a point to visit and educate brokers who did not have environmental resources.”
In 1996, Boren took over AIG Environmental Insurance as CEO. His years working in the environmental industry were invaluable to him as he took on this new role. At the time, there were only three retail brokers selling environmental insurance. He flew around the country for three years, every week, introducing retailer brokers to this new line of insurance. He jokes that he went to the airport and returned three years later.
Boren led from the frontline, expanding products while listening to insureds’ needs. He created the need while understanding changes in environmental laws that were supporting the growth of the space. Boren ultimately built AIG Environmental into the largest environmental insurance carrier in the world; it went from $80 million in premiums and 25 employees to $1.1 billion in environmental insurance premiums and over 300 employees. Under his progressive leadership, many environmental insurance executives received the technical foundation and professional development that prepared them for high-level management positions across the industry.

Johnson placed his energy back into his passion for leading Liberty. He changed the company’s mission statement to “promoting peace of mind with great care” and its core values to “integrity, excellence, caring, kindness, fairness, teamwork, good feelings and fun!” The team embraced these principles in a way that Johnson never would have imagined. They became present in the environment in a very authentic way; they began to serve as the eight North Stars that guide Liberty’s decisions and actions in different situations. Since then, with Johnson at the helm, the company just took off.

Milestones
Boren created the market and employed hundreds over his tenure. Today, the premiums in this market exceed $4 billion.
Also in 1996, Boren started Ironshore Environmental Insurance with a team of 20 and, in 10 years, grew the business to over $250 million in premiums with 150 people. Today, it is worth more than $400 million in premiums. In his role as president of US field operations, Boren built out Ironshore’s national distribution platform, which was responsible for the marketing of all the company’s insurance products at a local level. As chairman of Ironshore Environmental, he launched the unit’s offerings of products and services that addressed environmental incidents and liability risks.
Throughout Boren’s tenure at AIG and Ironshore, he was very active in professional associate development, intern recruiting and taking high-performing employees under his wing. Many current executives at environmental insurance carriers (such as Beazley, Ascot, Ironshore and Allied Word Assurance Company) started with Boren. He has been a mentor to hundreds and developed much of the C-suite of the environmental insurance market we see today.
In 2019, Boren joined Synapse Services, the largest wholesaler in environmental insurance, as a senior advisor. Three of the five partners at this company worked for him at AIG. His knowledge, influence, and advice have been instrumental to the successful growth of Synapse Services.
“I seem to have a perfect part-time job working for Synapse Services, the largest environmental wholesale broker, which employs most of my former colleagues, including my son David,” he says. “While that is fun, the real goal is traveling the world with my wife, Daryl, and watching our five grandchildren pursue what makes them happy.”
Joseph Boren is a visionary leader who has shaped the insurance industry. He has more than 50 years of insurance industry experience, primarily in the environmental industry, and has held numerous leadership and management positions.
