John Michael (Mike) Falvey, founder and CEO of Falvey Insurance Group, is a 1978 graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Following his graduation, he worked at AFM as a cargo underwriter.
In 1979, he went to sea with various shipping companies and joined the US Military Sealift Command, where he served as first assistant engineer on board MSC vessels, providing fleet support for the US Navy. From 1983 to 1984, he was the liaison officer for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in London. In 1984, he joined Donald J. Rojas in Warwick, Rhode Island and served as an underwriter until 1995.
In 1995, he started Falvey Cargo Underwriting, a cover note facility of Lloyd’s. The company specializes in providing marine cargo cover for the high-tech and life science industries. It is the largest cargo cover note facility in Lloyd’s. He has grown that company since its inception into the multidisciplined Falvey Insurance Group.
Falvey holds the following insurance designations: Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, Associate in Risk Management and Associate in Marine Insurance Management. In 2020, he graduated from Harvard Business School OPM 55.
