“I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes”
Ken Dixon,
Dixon Insurance Services
Joe Hayes is managing director of Jencap Specialty Insurance Services.
He brings unparalleled expertise in the realm of casualty insurance, with a distinctive specialization in challenging real estate and construction risks.
Hayes began his insurance career as an underwriter at GenRe in 2003. Shortly after, he assumed the role of assistant vice president for Tri City Brokerage, which merged with Crump Insurance in 2008, and he became vice president. In 2010, he joined Wholesale Trading Insurance Services (WTIS), assuming the role of director and then took on his current position following Jencap’s acquisition of WTIS in 2016.
He says, “My career plan was to be abundantly successful financially. It has since transitioned into one of seeking fulfilment.”
Hayes has strategically become a renowned industry leader but admits that his start was more serendipitous.
“Nothing about my career has been by chance except having known the head of Human Resources at GenRe back in 2003, who afforded me an opportunity to begin a career in insurance. From there, it was all elbow grease and hard work. The saying about being a believer in luck, resonates with me; I find the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”
Mindset has been an important part of Hayes’ ability to become one of the most sought-after casualty brokers in the industry, along with being able to correspond and think fast when addressing pressing issues.
Hayes comments, “My mindset is to be a clear, effective, and transparent communicator of news to both my retail partners and carrier partners. I keep them informed in real time and continue to look for creative solutions to problems that arise. The market is moving every day, and rapidly. We must set expectations that are both reasonable and deliverable for our retailers.”
In terms of his approach to his career, Hayes prioritizes:

“My approach with the market is vitally important – looking out for my underwriters’ best interests, listening to them, adding value to the transaction, and operating with integrity.”
Despite his professional achievements and widespread industry acclaim, Hayes is still energized by the instant euphoria of closing deals and leading his team.
“Motivation for me comes in the form of seeing others around me flourish and grow – colleagues, underwriters, and retailers. I also like to win deals and write business. There is nothing like ringing the binder bell in the office.”
