“I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes”
Ken Dixon,

Omar Dogbey is a senior underwriter at Sompo International who specializes in cyber, miscellaneous professional liability, technology, and architect and engineers coverages.
While only 27, he’s already made great strides in the industry. Like many, Omar wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do after college. “I graduated with a math degree with a concentration in actuarial science,” he explains. “I didn't know what I wanted to do – I thought I’d probably end up an actuary.”
Omar started his insurance journey as a systems analyst on the leadership development team at AIG, where he assisted with the creation and execution of companywide programs used to develop early career talent and middle management.
Then, inspired by a presentation on underwriting, he grew interested in the field. With the encouragement of his then manager, he pursued the discipline, joining the financial lines team as a professional liability and cyber underwriter, where he spent the next two years. “She was very helpful trying to put me in front of people who could definitely help guide my career path in underwriting. So, I had support systems in place, and that's when I also realized how important it is – especially in this industry – to leverage relationships and to build those relationships,” he says.
Also during his time at AIG, Omar was a co-founder of the Interfaith Employee Resource Group and an active member of the Black Professionals Employee Resource Group.
In 2021, Omar joined Sompo International as a Senior Underwriter within their Professional Lines unit, where he has had the opportunity to further develop his underwriting acumen in addition to growing both his internal and external professional network.
He prides himself on being an inclusion advocate and a future leader within the insurance industry. Omar has participated on numerous industry and association panels and speaks often about the importance of DE&I within our industry, closing the talent gap and developing ones personal brand.
For him, insurance is the best kept secret that shouldn’t be kept. “Why do we keep it a secret?” he says. “It’s not as widely recognized as investment banking or working at Tesla or Google. But insurance as a career provides longevity, job security, things along those lines that people look for after college.”
Outside of his day-to-day responsibilities, Omar serves as a junior board member of MRIA (Multicultural [Re]Insurance Association), a non-profit that promotes collaboration, networking, and is reimagining the idea of inclusion by turning it into a hub of diversification. He also serves on the steering committee of the eastern chapter of PLUS (Professional Liability Underwriting Society).
Omar is a proud member of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) and the Water Street Club.
He resides in Jersey City, New Jersey.

How does he distinguish himself among fellow brokers?
“I believe all brokers are working very hard in a difficult market,” he says. “However, I have demonstrated continued growth, advocacy and performance on my client’s behalf, which is now recognised [for 10 consecutive years] in the Elite Broker awards.”
In 1990, Dixon got started with FAI, working in claims and as a team leader. From the late 1990s up until 2003, he worked at FAI and Suncorp in underwriting and as an area manager at VACC, CGU (South East Queensland). From 2003 to 2012, he got into broking and eventually started Dixon Insurance in 2013. Since then, he’s accumulated numerous acccolades, including Elite Broker, Diversity and Equity, and Fast Broker awards.
During the pandemic, Dixon challenged insurers over the Quarantine Act application to insurance wordings. His argument was that the Quarantine Act does not apply as an exclusion, as the Biosecurity Act was invoked by the Morrison Government, and this was not a subsequent amendment to the Quarantine Act. The test case in the Appeals court was won for Dixon’s client with a unanimous five-judge verdict.
He remains focused on transport, manufacturing, motor trade, engineering and large farm clients.
What are his plans for the future?
On a business level, “more of the same. I will continue to empower and encourage my staff to perform at their best as I have done for the last decade. I will continue to advocate for my clients, embracing new technology and being open to business and industry changes.”
On a personal level, Dixon invests significant time, effort and funds, along with his GT3, to support many charities through his passion for motorsport. From participating in and sponsoring the Thunderbolt Run (which provides tens of thousands of dollars in support for Beyond Blue and Prostate Cancer), to organising and running the Track Knights for Amira charity night where 28 Exotic Supercars raised funds through passenger laps in wet conditions, Dixon states “this is our time to give back to the community and those in need. My friendships and association with those seeking to do the same, allows us to contribute to those less fortunate and raise funds and awareness”.
He adds: “To be able to give back to the community is rewarding and fulfilling. I am honoured to be in a position where I can raise funds for those less fortunate and in need.”
