“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Joining RPS as an intern in 2015, a year later Kaitlin MacGillivray became a commercial lines underwriting assistant before becoming an underwriter/broker in 2019, where she has thrived since.
“I am thankful to have gotten a start prior to Covid, as the next couple of years were challenging for a new production underwriter not being able to go on agency visits and network in a traditional manner,” says MacGillivray.
Despite this, she was able to grow her book of business year over year.
The biggest challenge she faces currently is balancing her time between investing in her team and mentoring new talent, while also maintaining relationships with agents and being available for them whenever they need her.
“This is a relationship business – both with your clients and with your team and support structure. I strive to be as available for my team as I am for my clients, as I believe that is the best bet for long-term success,” she comments.
Honing her organizational and efficiency skills are key to success.
“When underwriting and handling small business accounts, not only do you need to be an expert in the lines of business you are quoting, but you also need to be able to operate within time constraints set forth by clients. This means seamless communication and the ability to stay organized while working many accounts throughout a day,” she says.
Coming into the firm as an intern, McGillivray saw the importance of seizing opportunities.
She says, “Taking advantage of networking opportunities is important throughout your career, but I believe it is especially important early on. For those entering the industry right out of college, this is your opportunity to set yourself apart from other recent grads and establish yourself as a driven and motivated individual. I meet as many people as I can and work hard to build relationships with both peers and leaders in the industry.”
She believes it’s also important to actively listen and be curious.
“I strive to never ask the same question more than once. If someone has taken the time out of their day to invest in me by answering questions or giving advice, I don’t ever want them to feel like it wasn’t worth their time,” reveals MacGillivray.
“Being new in the industry provides you with such a broad bandwidth for asking questions and taking opportunities to learn, it is up to you to take advantage of it. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without the mentors I’ve had along the way. Having leaders who are engaged and invested in my own growth inspires the way that I strive to invest in new talent as well.”
Being a resource to both clients and her team is very important.
“The best way I’ve found to stay motivated in my role and not get lost in the day-to-day shuffle is by setting short-term goals for myself in addition to the long-term ones. Short-term accomplishments keep my competitive spirit thriving and working toward those bigger long-term career goals,” she says.
