“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Marty Toth began his insurance career at ACE USA in San Francisco in 2011, underwriting E&O and cyber for a wide range of industry classes.
In 2013, he joined Aspen Insurance with a specialty in underwriting lawyers and accountants professional liability.
During this early stage of his career, he became involved in leadership positions with both Emerging Insurance Professionals (EIP) and The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF).
As President of EIP from 2012 to 2015, Toth facilitated the organization of 10 events per year and doubled the non-profit’s sponsorship in his first year.
He was the chair of the IICF Associate Board until 2015 and remains actively involved today.
Marty has also supported the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS) in various leadership capacities, most recently being the co-chair of the San Francisco steering committee and championing its resurgence after the pandemic.
Today, at Aspen, he manages a small underwriting team, and coordinates the management of program business with two administrators, Brown & Brown’s Lawyers Protector Plan and Ryan Financial Lines’ Accountants Professional Liability Program
“I began my tenure in insurance, not with a set plan, rather a commitment to doing my best, and a philosophy to be a citizen of the industry through continued learning and a steward through regular networking and involvement. These simple principles have guided me to what has become a successful career, and helped develop business relationships that have evolved into friendships,” says Toth.
Toth has faced many challenges over the years working across all market segments within the LPL and APL product spaces, all with their own complexities and nuances.
“Developing relationships and collaborating to drive creative solutions within the program space and amongst our administrator relationships have been the most rewarding parts of my career thus far.”
“Time and respect are the cornerstones to developing relationships, and through appreciation for challenges faced, understanding of shared process and procedures, and the ability to make decisions with empathy while remaining disciplined to our company’s goals, our relationships with key trading partners are stronger than ever.”
As a professional liability underwriter, it is important to strike a balance between internal initiatives and market demands in order to support long-term sustainability in often volatile landscapes.
“I have learned that in a service industry such as this, it all comes down to people. Working with people you know, like and trust make it so much easier to weather the ups and downs of that volatility. Trust, however is not only built through regular communication or through being a responsive underwriter, but it also comes from consistency in approach and candor in consultation, all of which I take to heart and strive to embody in all interactions.”
A humble attitude combined with old-fashioned hard work has helped Toth garner success early in his career.
“I learned from a young age self-motivation is an aspect that is hard to teach, and if it is part of who you are it will help in all aspects of life. I have also learned over the years that there are different avenues one can take to deploy drive that will further the goal of making a well-rounded professional. I continually accept challenges, especially tasks or projects that are outside of my comfort zone as I feel that those are the moments that induce personal development, I invest in myself, and I simply do what’s right.”
