“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

ELITE WOMEN 2024 JUDGE
With over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, Alicia Calhoun has cultivated a career balanced between independent retail and wholesale brokerage.
Currently serving as senior vice president at XPT Specialty in Houston, TX, she specializes in casualty placements with a focus on energy, environmental, and construction risks. Her insurance journey began in 1999 with an independent agency in Manchester, NH, before transitioning to the wholesale side of the industry in 2010 after working for several reputable retail firms.
Calhoun states that navigating today’s challenging marketplace, and balancing client expectations with personal sales goals, are key hurdles in her role.
“The best way I’ve been able to navigate it is by staying consistent with my communication,” she explains. “This has been one of the hardest markets I have seen in my career, but it’s made me a stronger broker.”
Her relentless dedication to learning has been a driving force in her career. Holding multiple designations – including CIC, CRM, CRIS, and MLIS – Calhoun continuously strives to enhance her expertise. Mentorship and knowledge-sharing are central to her approach.
“My role is to encourage, inspire, and drive not only my team internally, but also the next generation of agents and brokers. I want to see people win. There is plenty of room at the top,” she says.
Calhoun’s passion for creating tailored insurance solutions and educating others distinguishes her within the industry. “I learn every day, and I pass that knowledge on – whether it’s to a colleague, an underwriter, an agency partner, or a team member,” she notes. Known for her signature phrase, “Add that to your bag of tricks,” she attributes her success to the collective wisdom shared by mentors and peers throughout her career.
For Calhoun, knowledge-sharing is a cornerstone of professional growth and a means of strengthening the industry, even if it’s not universally embraced. “Not everyone feels the same way about sharing knowledge, but for me, it’s about building a stronger, more informed industry for the future,” she says.
