Heather Chechila is a VP and senior property broker at Peachtree Special Risk Brokers in Boca Raton, FL. As a graduate of Florida State University’s risk management and insurance program, she began her insurance career immediately out of college with Peachtree Special Risk in St. Petersburg, where she cut her teeth brokering CAT property in the Tampa Bay area. Now with over 14 years of experience in the surplus lines arena, her market knowledge, creativity, fighting spirit and relationships have proven to be the competitive advantage needed to survive in the current industry landscape.
“My specialized expertise and technical approach to brokering are what set me apart from several of my peers in this challenging market landscape,” she explains. “I look at the overall dynamics of the risk. The utilization of high-resolution dated imagery, available permit data, loss analytics and in-house modeling allows me to approach my carrier partners from a more leveraged data-driven position. The research I do upfront and my true understanding of the risk give me the ability to identify potentially problematic forms, warranties and subjectivities during the brokering process.”
Chechila’s dedicated team in Boca Raton focuses on traditional E&S property business around the country, with a specialty in technical, multifamily and healthcare placements. She thrives on the competitive nature of brokering property deals and understands the importance of being proactive versus reactionary with the upmost communication when trading hard market business.
When she’s not taking on the insurance world, Chechila spends most of her time hanging out at home with her two golden retrievers, Kellan and Kobi. She loves traveling to Italy and drinking red wine. She is also a competitive equestrian who frequently spends time in Wellington riding her horses, a hobby that helps maintain her work-life balance.
“Trading in the current property space can be stressful at times,” she explains. “However, I’ve made it a point to dedicate three mornings a week to being at the barn riding my horses. It’s easy not to think about insurance when you’re galloping a 1,500-pound animal to a 4’ jump. You have to be in that moment and fully focused, regardless of what you have blowing up that day at your desk.”
