“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Wilson Rust is a senior vice president at MacDuff Underwriters, a member of the Bridge Specialty Group.
Like many insurance professionals, he has seen challenges and opportunities in the post-pandemic workplace.
“I would say that the signal challenge of my career has been making peace with the new world order of remote work post-COVID-19,” he says. “I have always lived in the office and, within reason, expected my team to do the same. Making the necessary adjustments to that approach was extremely challenging and the continual deterioration of the Florida property market unfolding at the same time seemed to add fuel to the fire.
“I’m still in our Daytona Beach office every day, but we now have members of our team in Palm Beach, Florida, Dallas, Texas and St. Augustine, Florida, in addition to those who are able to come into the office on a regular basis. We’re constantly trying to fine-tune the process, but taking a more flexible approach with remote work has allowed us to keep talented individuals on our team while also bringing new teammates on board as we have continued to grow.”
Since joining MacDuff Underwriters in 2013, Rust has risen through the ranks to become vice president in 2017, sales leader in 2018, and senior vice president and healthcare practice group leader in 2021.
He primarily works on tough-to-place E&S property businesses with a focus on healthcare- and real estate-driven schedules in Florida.
“Our team has always prioritized our carrier and underwriter relationships, even when it has not been easy to do so,” says Rust. “This approach has always served us and our clients in the retail community quite well, but it has truly become a difference-maker as we find ourselves in a historically challenging property market.”
Rust grew up in Ormond Beach, FL, and graduated from Auburn University in 2012 with a BA degree in political science. He has two daughters and a son on the way.
