“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Serving as the executive vice president for the executive lines division of Risk Placement Services (RPS) in Chicago, Illinois, Alex Kant was drawn to the endless opportunities of the insurance industry.
“Insurance was not something I planned on doing, but when I realized there was no ceiling to success within the industry, I was hooked,” says Kant. “Thinking creatively and forming relationships are both things I genuinely enjoy and consider a part of my personality.”
After graduating from the University of Illinois Chicago with a degree in finance and information decision systems, Kant started his insurance career as a public directors and officers (D&O) liability underwriter on the carrier side. Since switching to wholesale insurance at RPS, he has created and structured several exclusive insurance programs and designed management liability solutions across real estate, hospitality, education, and public entity.
He says, “Management liability is highly technical, and most of the placements are not cut and dry or dependent upon some formula. This has always attracted me to the specialty.”
For Kant, the key to success is persistence, which helps him solve problems and maintain relationships with clients.
“For us, it has never been about the size of a deal; it’s about doing what’s best for the buyer and ensuring they are getting what they need,” he says. “If I find a new angle or wedge within the marketplace, I never shy away from sharing that with my network.”
“I like to keep a continuous conversation with my clients to the best of my ability,” adds Kant. “Many people are scared of mixing business with personal friendships, but I find it to be the exact opposite. My career is part of my identity, and the relationships I form are never siloed.”
As an industry leader, Kant recognizes the importance of knowing when to step back and allowing team members to take charge.
He says, “Be positive and humble enough to know that it’s impossible to know everything within your vertical. It’s about looping in the true experts and playing quarterback when necessary. You go a lot further when you trust your colleagues and work as a team.”
Reflecting on the importance that mentorship has played in his career, Kant places great importance on developing young professionals in the industry.
“We have a high volume of younger professionals coming into the industry, bringing their own skillsets with them but often lacking a natural liking to broking itself,” he says. “Mentoring younger wholesale brokers is extremely important to me and will always be a priority since mentorship has been a driving force within my own journey.”
