“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

As president and CEO of WestPac, Eric Richter comes from a family with leadership running through their veins. The Colorado-based firm was established in 2003 by his father, marking the second iteration of a wholesale operation initially founded in 1918 by Richter’s great-grandfather.
“While I have always been proud of my family’s legacy in the insurance business and envisioned myself joining the organization at some point, I didn’t think it would be so early on in my career. Upon joining, I became the sixth employee, and I never looked back.“
Joining WestPac in 2009, Richter has taken on a variety of roles within the company, including brokering, underwriting, marketing, servicing, IT, administration, accounting, management, and now executive leadership.
“I firmly believe that WestPac provided more career opportunities than I might have encountered elsewhere – it was just my responsibility to seize those opportunities. I believe I’ve done that, and have turned challenges into growth opportunities, both for myself and WestPac.”
In 2013, Richter helped diversify WestPac beyond its construction capabilities and established new commercial binding and brokerage products for WestPac’s retailer partners. In recognition of his contributions, Richter has achieved industry accolades including:
- 2013 Colorado Big I Company Marketing Person of the Year
- 2014 Colorado Big I Young Person of the Year
- 2019 Insurance Business America | Young Gun
Richter considers his biggest achievement to have occurred in 2023, when he acquired WestPac from his father, solidifying the firm’s future as an independent wholesaler.
“I love this company, its people, and the direction we’re headed together. Taking over the reins allowed me to continue living out my career dream and, hopefully, create ongoing opportunities for everyone within the company.”
Reflecting on the challenges that come with leadership, Richter notes that it can be difficult to juggle executive functions and expanding business.
“My broker responsibilities over the years have helped contribute to the company’s growth, but as CEO and president, my primary focus needs to be strategic leadership functions. Achieving this balance is no easy feat, but it becomes possible through the support of my exceptional team.”
For Richter, providing value to agents and carrier partners means keeping up to date with industry trends. Through meeting with developers and builders, tracking house trends and other home building economics, the CEO strives to immerse himself in the industry as much as possible.
“Our company continues to thrive because I, along with my team, have the mindset of helping our partners understand the complexities of residential construction in tough markets like Colorado,” he says.
“My dad used to say he loved helping insure home builders because ‘home builders built the American Dream.’ I’ll admit that I inherited that trait as well.”
